Suggested Oblations: A walk in the city to find something you never saw before, exploring the subway tunnels, watching a sunrise or sunset from a penthouse apartment, visiting a museum or other tourist attraction, attending a party with a “list,” serving food at a homeless shelter, sleeping on a park bench

First Attunement[edit]

  • Attune Prerequisites: Gnosis 3, Time 2 (primary), Fate 1
  • After seeing Ariadne’s thread, the first step a mage must take is attuning himself to the city. He must initially spend six hours walking through the city, following Ariadne’s thread. After this, he may use this attunement to feel the city’s history. This resembles the Time 2 spell “Postcognition.” While the mage might not know names, he can tell if and when a man was murdered on this street corner, or if a couple made love in a park or if a mage committed a vulgar spell in a movie theater.
  • A mage is not married to the city in which he Awakened. He can attune himself to any city he is in. The symbolism of the city makes itself known to the mage, as the city’s resonance applies different meanings to different things. (For example, a park’s “Tunnel of Love” may resonate happiness or sexual energy for most cities, but if a brutal murder happened there, the ride may resonate with fear, hatred and death.) This knowledge will come in handy in later attainments.

Background[edit]

It was, perhaps, not surprising that Robin Delburton awoke in the Arcadian watchtower. He was a dreamer first and foremost, preferring flights of fantasy to harsh realities and always willing to accept a pleasing lie over a distressing truth. He immersed himself in fiction, delving deep into worlds of the imagination and endlessly creating his own tales to amuse himself – always with him as the hero. Robin always knew he was destined for greatness, even as his parents and teachers despaired of his airy-fairy attitude and blithe self-assurance that seemed to make it certain that he would never make anything of himself other than a hopeless dreamer or worse. Robin made his way through High School with passable grades far beneath what was expected of him, and chose to study part-time at a local community college rather than deal with the rigours of a full college course. Things, as usual, seemed to be carrying on without a hitch.

Then, a brief couple of months ago, Robin received something of a shock when walking late at night through one of Atlanta's more unsavoury areas. He reached a crossroads, looked around to see which way seemed the best to go, and saw... himself, walking happily down each of the three different roads, roads which now stretched off far into the distance. As he watched, almost paralysed with fear and shock, he saw each of his three selves go through their lives, each doing great and terrible things, each making their way inexorably to a point where all three paths met, where he knew that he would do something, something that would change his life and the lives of those around him forever, something that would turn out differently depending on which path he walked and how well he walked it. As Robin watched events unfold before his disbelieving eyes, he knew what he had to do. He turned down the path that seemed the best, ran down it, and ran until he found himself somewhere else, in a magical land, at the base of a great tower.

When Robin returned to the world as he knew it, he was shocked into near-insensibility. He might have come to a sudden and bad end there in the Atlantan streets had he not run into a man he knew quite well, an employee of the local Games Workshop store with whom he was quite friendly. Robin babbled the disjointed fragments of his tale to his friend, who rather than taking him to hospital to receive psychiatric help dragged him straight back to his home. There, the man filled Robin in on what had just happened, and introduced himself properly for the first time: he was also a Mage, and he went by the name of Magnus. Much to his surprise, he seemed to have just acquired himself an apprentice.

Today, Robin has undergone a massive personality change. Many Acanthus retain their self-assurance in the face of possible misfortune, trusting to luck to save them. In his magic, however, Robin found only paranoia and uncertainty. He saw something when he awoke, something in his future, something with truly world-shaking consequences – but he has no idea what it was he saw, or how he was supposed to achieve it. His memories come to him in brief flashes in dreams, and sometimes in his spells he sees things he recognises in the future, but otherwise his mind is a blank. He has to achieve his Destiny, he knows he does – the optional outcomes are few, and only one is in any way bearable for him or those around him. Thusly, he obsesses over the future, over the winds of chance, over choosing the right path to walk and the right paths for others to walk. He's not above manipulating people into doing what he needs, but he is reluctant to do so regularly, fearing the loss of people's trust and with it the ability to advise them on their best course of action.

Robin named himself Eldrad in honour of his Mentor and of one of his favourite other worlds. He longs to possess his namesake's ability to change the shape of events to come, but lacks the experience to do so and knows it. Once he has that experience, however... anything is possible.
