Backgrounds[edit]
Decades ago Rygelius Sledge weaseled his way into a commission from the Nerathi Empire to construct a regiment of clanks for the purpose of forcibly pacifying Winterbole Forest. Sledge was a better salesman than he was an artificer and the inhabitants of the forest routed his creations easily. The officers abandoned the few surviving clanks without further orders.
- Why was the community you grew up in so reliant on nature and its creatures?
- Because it was an almost entirely uninhabited part of the Winterbole Forest - Prototype "grew up" amidst nature and its creatures in the sense that there is where they became their current self. Inspired by the way plants and animals grew around the remains of the fallen clanks in their regiment, they began modifying themself with wood and stone and other materials and adapting to the natural rhythms of the forest, eventually learning to gently nudge those rhythms in ways they desired.
- Who as the first wild animal you bonded with? Why did your bond end?
- For the first several years in the forest Model 8 Unit 14 didn't move at all, lacking orders or any intrinsic drive. During that time a bird built a nest on their shoulder and raised several clutches of hatchlings before being eaten by a predator. It was an important step on the road to becoming the being known as Prototype, because it demonstrated nature's adaptability and showed them that they could be part of nature.
- Who has been trying to hunt you down? What do they want from you?
- Rygelius Sledge, who recently learned that one of his old eventually started acting on its own and even, if reports are to be believed, employing druidic magic. This implies some substantial modifications to the unit's original orichalcide core, which Sledge wants to extract and study. Prototype is probably not even aware of this threat.
Connections[edit]
- What did you confide in me that makes me leap into danger for you every time?
- Tak: While Prototype was healing Tak from his severe wounds, someone asked Tak, "You could have left. They weren't after you. Why didn't you just walk away?" Tak simply responded, "I was asked to help, and I will never stop fighting if the cause is worth it."
- What animal do I say you remind me of?
- Eliseach: Tall and slim, possessed of a singular grace, Eliseach seems to make Proto think most of a Willow Tree.
- What affectionate nickname have you given me?
- Rose: Entle Proto
