Nentir[edit]
The Lands[edit]
Introduction[edit]
Nentir sits at the northern reach of the Nerathi Empire, the edge of Imperial reach. The bulk of the province lays in the Vale, between the Dawnforge mountains on the east and the western Stonefang Peaks that mark the border with the Stonemarch. While King Elidyr attempts reforms the Imperial Heartlands to the south his efforts, much like his predecessors demands, are slow to effect the northern lands.
Imperial power in Nentir is concentrated in Fallcrest, seat of the Lord Warden. Sited atop the waterfalls of the River Nen, the 'Lord Warden's Keep stands watch over the city that has grown around it under Imperial Rule.
To the east, high in the Dawnforge Mountains sits the necropolis-city of Hammer's Rest, where devotee's of the Forge God have long gathered to be buried, and where their ghosts often still dwell. Interfering with the ghosts is asking to invite the wrath of the city's Bright Council.
South of Hammer's Rest is Harkenwold, a collection of small towns and villages sprung up around the King's Road, the main land route south to the Heartland. Skirting around the southern tip of the mountains will bring a traveller to the coastal town of Ashenport - the province's other significant connection to the south.
Travelling west from Fallcrest will bring a wanderer to the town of Winterhaven, the furthest reach of the Empire. A small town surrounded by farming land, caught between the Stonefang Peaks and Winterbole Forest.
The forest, and the people who dwell there, were a thorn in the side of the previous Emperor; the Winterbole proved too much effort to conquer and could not be convinced to pay tribute. Backed by the coven commonly known as the Frost Witches, the people of Winterbole keep watch on the roads for signs of aggression. Skirmishes are frequent, though a return to outright war has so far been avoided.
Even within the Vale, Imperial rule was never complete. Undernearth the perpertually storm-wracked Thunderspire Peak sits and entrance to the Lands Below. The main passage was transformed long ago into a marketplace ruled over by the Mages of Saruun. Rare goods from the subterranean settlements are traded for materials from the surface with ne'er a coin going to the Imperial Treasury.
If one were to keep heading west, beyond Winterhaven, a day's ride beyond the official border one would come to the place currently known as Kiris Dahn. The town has changed hands countless times, built again and again over the ruins of the previous settlement. Currently the town stands proudly independent, and many traders extend their journeys to find interesting items from the Stonemarch and beyond.
Recently, bandits have been attacking travellers leaving Kiris Dahn for the Vale. Lacking the troops to hunt the raiders, the Meister of Kiris Dahn has requested assistance from the Lord Warden. Unwilling to risk provoking the Witches of Winterbole, the Lord Warden instead arranged for an independent group to investigate.
