Pitch[edit]

Do you know how thin the fate of our thread hangs is?

I'm not just talking about any one threat. It's thousands. Every year on this little blue ball, we've faced the possibility of some kind of disaster or another. The very fact of our exsistance is an absurbity, our planet only habitable through a happy accident of distances and time and space. And every year, or decade, or if we're lucky, century, we face some kind of threat that promises to wipe out that fragile impossibility if we do not face it. Global Warming, Mutually Assured Destruction, astroids, cosmic fuxtations - each of these things is happening or has happened or threatens to happen, and we try and deal with them, blindly, stumbling through accients and solutions as we try one after another. We can always see the sword of Damocles hanging above our head, but we have never known if, or when, it will fall, and how to stop it. But, every time, so far, we have stopped it. Other worlds have not been so lucky.

Trickles of refugees come in. No more than a few, because not every poor bozo caught in their apocalypse has the potential to escape it. But some, the exceptional, the lucky, the brave, or the incredibly curious make it through. It's mostly a one-way trip so far, because there not much on this world, this universe, that can travel to others, and that is likely part of the reason we have survived so long. It's no easy thing. But these refugees do exist. Strangers from a strange land, from worlds where dinosaurs never died, to where Atlantis rules the world and waves, to where imortal things terroize the night, to ones whose only difference to our own is that they did not survive the threats we faced. Some run from apocalypses, some run from repression, some run in hope of prosperity or peace, but they have ended up here, and we need to deal with them. They are in a world different from their own, possibly more than they can imagine, where even the laws of physics may not work as they expect. They need us to explain, to help, to police the unruly and to aid the needy, and to get them to aclimatize to this brave new world of theirs. And we, we...

We can make use of them, and they can make use of us. The world's a strange place already. What's the harm of a little more strangeness?
