Meanwhile, Joshua and Arden are riding with the others on the tram, heading for the Agro deck and the party promised to be waiting for them there. The ride stretches long and passes through several empty stations before they see another living soul. Several souls, really, and they're waiting on the platform. They're happy like everyone here, but they look nothing like the laid-back pseudo-hippies we've so far encountered. These guys look harder, edgier … meaner. They're kitted out much like the hippies in a motley of clothing but they also have improvised weapons in hand, too. Clubs for the most part. Some have fashioned bits of armor out of found objects and loose parts. Kinda like … Punk Rocker Proto-Reavers.

The tram slows and comes to a halt. The doors open. Looks like this is our stop. The Hippies grab their stuff and edge out onto the platform as the Punks circle round. Do Joshua and Arden follow?

Hmm. Well, the only people who know where they're going have already stepped off and it looks like they might end up as lunch … but scary as they might look, the Punks haven't done anything, content for now with just looking threatening. They're raucous though, and move around with a menacing gusto. Some of them toss out a few things that the Hippies left behind, as if aiming to hit them but falling short to smash on the platform.

Arden: Why aren't they celebrating.
Hippie #1: They are.
Arden: They are?

We can hear them on the tram, headbanging and making noise. The tram takes off and everyone on the platform is not sorry to see them go.

Joshua: That was interesting. What's up with them?
Hippie #2: Oh … Yeah. Some people celebrate a little more …
Arden: They looked angry.
Joshua: Not just the angry thing. They looked like they kinda had that whole gang thing going.
Hippie #1: You have to understand, when the station was … uh … invaded by the Purplebellies …
Joshua: Yeah?
Hippie #1: A lot of the decks were cut off and command structure fell apart. They took out the command pretty quick. And so you had PDF security on some levels trying to keep things their kind of order, and you had civilians like us that were just—well, not even civilians, like, non-combatants that were in our areas.
Joshua: Right.
Hippie #1: Yeah and wherever they were, some people had to … fight on their own without any support …
Joshua: You had to do what you had to do to survive. I get it.
Hippie #1: And I guess those guys, what they … That's how they cleared decks and such. With their own … (gestures) … And now they want the rewards.
Joshua: All right. No point in getting into a fight. It's party time. Do you know where we are?

The Hippies look around and one looks at the walls. He grimaces.

Hippie #3: Oooh.
Joshua: I don't like that. Well, no, wait. Maybe I do. So … what's up?

Hippie #3 points at some graffiti. It's a stylized skull.

Hippie #3: Well … Yeah. We're in Skull territory.
Joshua: You look like you know what's going on. Who are you? What's your name?
Hippie #3: We don't have a name.
Joshua: So you're not, like, the Hearts or something?
Hippie #3: No …
Joshua: Were those the Skulls just now?
Hippie #3: Probably.
Joshua: Okay. We could take them. So … where's the next station?

The Hippies deliberate the territory some more and come up with a possible direction. Deck Twelve … there's probably a lift. There are stairs going to a lift. Probably back there … not too far.

Hippie #1: We can either wait for another tram and hope that it's empty or we can try to take one of the main walkways and see if we can find another lift and go up a couple of levels. Or we can take one of the access tubes, but …
Joshua: What's in the access tubes? You don't sound particularly excited about them.
Hippie #1: Well, some of them …
Arden: Have they even been scrubbed yet?
Hippie #1: Yeah, some people have been sayin' that there's some unusual things going on in the access tubes.
Joshua: Really?

On a station that's wall to wall unusual, what would you consider unusual?

Hippie #1: Not the good kind of usual. People disappearing.
Joshua: This sounds like something that needs to be investigated.
Arden: No it doesn't.
Joshua: Well, look. I don't think staying here waiting for the tram sounds like a good idea. You're talking about waiting here for an empty one and what's the likelihood the next one is going to be empty? It might have Sharks coming back in it, or Skulls … or whatever they are.
Hippie #1: Of course, if we meet them in the halls, that could be bad too.
Joshua: Okay, so it sounds like the proper thing to do is to check the access tubes out. And—yes, Arden?

Arden's actually trying to raise his crewmates on his ear bud and having no luck. He throws Joshua a sour look.

Arden: Not good.
Joshua: Look. How hard can it be. We take the access tunnels, go up a couple of levels. We got it.
Arden: We are not going up the access tunnels.
Joshua: Why not?
Arden: It's too risky.
Joshua: It's more risky than running into a band of those crazy Skull people?
Arden: Yes.
Joshua: I'm sorry. I gotta—
Arden: Need I remind you of the chemicals that were sprayed on the crowd on the planet where half of them went Reaver? That's why we don't want to go in the access tunnels.
Joshua: No that's why we don't want to run into the Skulls. They're the ones who look like they're the ones who went Reaver.

Arden will not be convinced. Joshua turns to the Hippies.

Joshua: All right. What do you guys say?
Arden: No, this isn't a decision for them. This is a decision for you and me.
Joshua: Oh, well then I have to pull Lieutenant Commander rank on you. Access tunnels it is.
Arden: I'll just pull Medical Officer rank on you and say I think it's medically unsafe to take the access tubes.

To say nothing of declaring Joshua unfit for command.

Joshua: All right. Look. Then we'll wait. We'll wait here for another tram. If the next one comes and has a huge pile of Skulls, then—
Arden: We'll deal with it then.
Joshua: No, I'm saying if it the tram has Skulls and we can't get on, then it's the access tunnels.
Arden: No. I'm not doing that.
Joshua: (crossing arms) We'll wait a little bit for the tram.

Speaking of trams … Kiera, Nika, and Rina have made it to the platform they got off on and have caught a tram ride toward the Agro deck. It's where they're expecting to find Joshua and Arden waiting for them. The tram takes them to another station and they catch a tram going in a different direction and it's in a little better shape than the one they rode over on.

When they get to the Agro deck, they see that it's one of the huge sprawling open decks of Pericles Station they've actually been to before. It once had restaurants and shops along the walls facing the concourse. Beyond the concourse is the large garden area and beyond that is the actual agriculture section where food is grown. A good portion of the shop-side space has been converted into something like a tent city, something like a Deadhead concert fair, something like a flea market. A lot of the shops have been converted to flea market use, some appear to have been looted at one point. A lot of the people are milling around wearing designer apparel, mixed with plainer stuff—as if the looters stopped looting and decided to just hang out here instead.

And there's good reason to hang out here. There's food and drink, there's music. People are partying here. Mind, most of the food available is texturized and none of the crew—especially their resident twitch—feels particularly comfortable eating it. But it's free and it's not algae and as such, it's better than what we've had for weeks. Kiera eyes it dubiously.

Kiera: You know that story of Persephone of eating those six seeds?
Rina: I heard it was three.
Kiera: I just don't feel like it's a really smart idea to eat the food.
Nika: Yeah. (sighing) Let's see if we can find some canned goods. That stuff's less likely to be contaminated but that stuff? (nods at the protein) Definitely a good chance it's been contaminated.

There is one area on the deck where the people are looking more official and pulled together. They're still friendly and everyone here is in party-mode, but they do look more like they know what they're doing. They appear to be guarding a cordoned off area with food stocked behind them. They have weapons, not being waved around or anything. They're just there, minding the store, and watching the party. And the party is like Mardi Gras. It's like the giant Ewok celebration on Endor after the destruction of the Second Death Star.

Now that's a party!

Back in the depths of the station, Joshua and Arden get impatient waiting. They find the controls for calling the tram smashed and broken. Great. Now what? Joshua tries fiddling with the loose wires, trying to get a live connection and maybe summon up that tram but it's a no-go.

Joshua: I'll give it ten more minutes.
Arden: You don't have a choice in the matter. We're not taking the access tubes.
Joshua: So you think.
Arden: No, I know we're not.
Joshua: So you think.

So they wait. They don't have long. Soon after they hear a noise growing louder and louder, coming in their direction from one of the hallways. It sounds like a victory party. It sounds like an angry mob. Maybe it's both. The Hippies start looking nervous and Joshua takes his cue from them.

Joshua: Which way to the access tunnels?
Arden: NO!
Joshua: Which way to the access tunnels?
Arden: You're going by yourself.
Joshua: Dude, you can't leave me. We can't leave you.
Arden: You can. Watch me.
Joshua: You're going to get killed.
Arden: I don’t care. Better than the access tunnels.

Joshua exhorts the rest of the group to convince Arden to follow them to the tunnels. It's a total fail. Arden jumps onto the tram tracks and starts following them back the way we came. They must lead somewhere and only to one somewhere. And it's somewhere we've already been. Do that long enough, and we'll find our way back to our starting point. And isn't that how you find your way back home?

Joshua: You're gonna hit the third rail.
Arden: I'll take my chances.
Joshua: No! There's a perfectly good access tunnel with a mystery involved.
Arden: And here's a perfectly good tram tunnel with a mystery involved. We just better not be hit by the tram.
Joshua: That is a boring mystery. I want the access tunnel. Let's go.

No.

Joshua: I don’t know why you're being such a putz about this. It's fine.
Arden: I don't know why you have a death wish the way you do.
Joshua: This is not a death wish.
Arden: Neither is my—
Joshua: Have I died yet? No.
Arden: There's always a first time.
Joshua: And a last time. But I don't plan to die.
Arden: I don't either and that's why I'm walking out of here.

Arden starts walking down the tram tunnel and some of the Hippies start to follow.

Joshua: You're going with me.
Arden: No, I'm not.
Joshua: We're going up the access tunnels.
Arden: You're going by yourself.
Joshua: Come on, Arden.
Arden: No.
Joshua: Arden. Sweet Jesus, you're going to get these people killed.

What if a tram comes along and smears everyone to jelly?

Arden: That's not really my problem.
Joshua: You're a doctor. Aren't you supposed to care about human life?
Arden: I do. I—
Joshua: (grokking) Don't say your own. I don't want to hear it.
Arden: What people do on their own time against my advice is not my fault.
Joshua: What does Valerie say about this?
Arden: I don't care what Valerie says about this?

And she's been staying out of this debate the entire time. Probably laughing her butt off.

Arden: I'm walking back. I'm not taking the access tubes.
Joshua: Grahhhgh! (scrubs face) I knew I should have gone by myself. I knew it! (yells after Arden's back) Everything I've done, I've come out the other side smelling like roses. I can't be held responsible—

Damn. Joshua's not going to abandon his friend and crewmate. He jumps onto the tracks and starts following his friend. Maybe he can demote Arden down to Private or something when they get back to the ship. As Arden's superior officer, Joshua has the power to do it. As a friend, however, he doesn't want to. Either way, he can't leave Arden.

Arden, thank God, is sensible enough to use the walkways. Joshua asks the Hippies if the tunnel has any access hatches or where they might lead. Can we get to the Agro deck from here? Or maybe use the access tunnels? He gets a confused collection of answers basically saying that no, they don't know and the map functions at various info panels have been mostly taken offline. At least they're going in a direction away from the noise threatening from the hallway.

Joshua: There's a good chance we're going to get totally lost.
Arden: Like we're not now?
Joshua: Well no, not now.

They walk a bit in silence. Arden breaks it.

Arden: Okay, so if we took the access tunnels, and I'm not saying we are, what do you think is going to happen to us? Where will it get us? Do you think we'll find stairs to take us four decks up?
Joshua: Besides from the mystery—
Arden: Is there no other way to get the next deck up?
Joshua: The only reason for going up is the tendency it will get us away from the Skulls. It's more likely to get us away from the Skulls than walking along here.

Which just keeps us on the same level as the same. And since that's a given, it's not long before the Skulls from the hallway catch up with them. They're like the punks from the previous train platform: adrenaline pumped, reckless, happy, AND menacing.

Oh, my brothers but we shall have ourselves a time tonight!

Joshua: Party's that way, man! The party's that way.

He points back the way they all came and tries to look menacing. Arden follows Joshua's lead and pulls his pistol from his doctor's bag. He holds it by his leg, not aimed but still out and ready to shoot if necessary. The Skulls stop about 20 feet away from our party. They have improvised clubs and one has a stunner hanging off his belt. One of the Skulls has a club augmented with spikes and he seems to be the leader. He nods at Arden's gun and rasps:

Skull Leader: Guns ain't allowed on Skull territory.
Arden: That's why I'm leaving.
Skull Leader: You'll have to hang it up. Hand it over.
Arden: No.
Skull Leader: (cheerfully) Then we're gonna havta take it.
Arden: You can try.
Joshua: Look, we're lookin' to get out of Skull territory. Let us keep going that way, which will lead us out of Skull territory and you can keep going back to clearin—
Skull Leader: Pay the toll, hand over your weapons, and you can all leave.
Joshua: I don't have any weapons.
Skull Leader: Hand over the weapon and pay the toll.
Arden: What's the toll?
Skull Leader: Oh well, you'll have to find out.

Arden shoots him. The Skull Leader gets winged and staggers back a few steps. He's not dead, but now he's wounded. Yeah, there's no way this could go poorly.

Joshua: You know what I hear calling me?
Arden: What?
Joshua: The access tunnels.
Arden: (to the Skull Leader) Unless you really want to make an issue of this, I suggest you go find your party in the other direction.

The wounded man looks around at his mates.

Skull Leader: (indignant) You shot me.
Arden: And I'll do it again. (points gun back the way they came) Which is why you should go find your party.
Skull Leader: What's your name?
Arden: Joshua.

Joshua says nothing. This is Arden's play and he's backing it.

Skull Leader: (steely, at Arden) We'll see you around, Joshua. (to his gang) Let's let him go this time.
Skull #2: We c'n take'em! We got more'n them.
Skull Leader: Yeah, yeah. (waves them back) I got a plan …

The Skulls gather themselves up and leave.

Arden: Come, Arden. Let's go.
Joshua: What the hell?! Every time I go somewhere with you, I regret it!
Arden: I'd like to point out that I made them back down.
Joshua: But why did you … (gives up)
Arden: Use your name? What does it matter? They were going to kill us both anyway.
Joshua: I got a reputation I have to worry about.
Arden: Oh, please.
Joshua: I never shot anybody before. (off Arden's sputter) Except Reavers. And they aren't Reavers.
Arden: That's not true anymore, is it?
Joshua: What is?
Arden: That you've never shot anyone. I heard this guy Joshua pulled out his gun and started shooting.
Joshua: Yeah, well you didn't say a last name so I think we got it covered. Let's get moving.

Joshua and Arden hustle their party further down the tunnels and make it over to the first access tunnel they can find. They manage to go up four decks and make it out to a much cleaner tram line, where they catch a much cleaner tram to the Agro deck. There they meet up with Kiera, Rina, and Nika.

Arden: I need you to talk to Joshua. He's shooting people now.
Nika: What?!
Arden: (laughs)
Joshua: The long and the short of it is, Arden was Arden. And that shouldn't need any explanation.

Rina grabs Arden's hands, inspects them, and nods.

Rina: Uh huh. GSR.
Arden: … Okay … ?
Joshua: They got scared off by him saying he was Joshua and shooting one of them. And they have plans for Joshua. Later, it seems. The Skulls do.
Arden: They asked me what my name was and the first that came to mind was Joshua.
Joshua: Don't ask me why but it offends me on a deep level, one I can't begin to tell you.
Rina: All right, wait. Skulls?

Joshua and Arden tell the women of the gangs they encountered on the lower decks.

Nika: Arden?
Arden: Yes?
Nika: Pala.
Arden: Yes?
Nika: I'm a little concerned about—(gestures)—all the way around here.
Arden: I'm saying we leave if we can.
Nika: Can we actually manage to get everything hooked up and get refueled?
Arden: I don't know.
Rina: We can try.
Nika: Cuz lemme tell you what. The people on the bridge? They're as laissez faire as the rest of these guys.
Arden: Really? They're in favor of free trade?

Yes, Arden. Not!

Arden: I have a suggestion before we leave on our ship. Doggie bags. Big, big, doggie bags. (gestures) All this food?
Kiera: Are you insane? It's open.
Arden: So?
Kiera: It's contaminated.
Arden: How do you know?
Rina: Run tests on it first.
Nika: Pick up anything that's canned, unopened. Go for it.

Joshua tells Nika what he's learned of the access tunnels from the Hippies, that there's something mysterious stuff going on in them. Nika tells him that Rina chased somebody down one, too.

Joshua: Can we go check it out?
Nika: No.
Joshua: Why not?
Nika: Because I have this notion that it's probably the same folks that you ran into with the clubs.
Joshua: No, the thing is the people with the clubs aren't running into the access tunnels to escape, so I think it's a whole different set.
Rina: You know what it sounds like to me?
Joshua: What's it sound like to you?
Rina: This is what happened on Miranda, only the extreme ends—you're so laid back you're dead and you're so violent you're Reaver—they've made it towards the middle. It's moderated. It's like … Miranda Lite.
Nika: So that would mean that the vast majority of people would still be … mostly okay?

Joshua suggests that maybe the Skulls are like Proto-Reavers clearing the tunnels. They seemed intelligent and aware. They were aggressive but not crazy like Reavers. So the evidence suggests that the station did get hit with something like the Pax on Miranda. Pax Lite, even.

Nika: If we're talking about another Pax derivative, only this time they've gone in the other direction, so you have the vast amount of people getting very aggressive or very calm, it does stand to reason that there's some small percentage that it just plain doesn't affect. Right?
Kiera: (slowly) True.
Nika: So Joshua's suggesting that the people in the access tunnels are the people it didn't affect and they're just trying to stay clear and survive.
Arden: He just wants to get into the access tunnels.
Joshua: That is true.

Kiera muses that maybe that's why the Fed ship is hanging out in the area. Rina suggests that it's simply waiting for everyone on the station to die out, like a besieged city in Medieval times—poison the city's well and let nature take its course.

Arden: That being said, I'd like to bring up the main topic that we should be discussing. Refueling the ship and getting the heck out of here. Therefore I suggest we grab as much food as we possibly can, in cans, whatever.
Nika: So the question is, do we actually have enough manpower to manage the refuel on our own.

Rina says she can hook up all the hoses but the main switch for the pump would be controlled somewhere off the actual landing dock. A gantry or an office overlooking the dock itself, for instance. It'll be a two-step process—hook up, then go where the switch is and throw it. Doable on our own.

Rina: We need one person on the switch. One person on the hoses.
Joshua: I would like to know where we're going first, because that makes a difference on how much food we're going to need.
Nika: What's closest to here?

Blue Sun: Meridian or Highgate.

Arden: Highgate sounds like a good idea to me.
Nika: Highgate.
Joshua: I don't think we're going to be able to get enough food in bags.
Nika: Blue Sun is ten days.

Joshua shakes his head. We're not going to be able to take enough food in three bags to feed us all for ten days. Actually, since it's closer to fourteen, fifteen days. No matter—ten, fifteen, or fifty—it's not going to happen. In addition to fuel, we'll need to flush our sewage system, take on water, and basically get our maintenance done—which maintenance we'll likely skip in favor of the water, fuel, and food. How long would it take us to flush our sewage, restock our food, and take on water and fuel, Nika asks her crew. Rina says if we're all working together and get everyone working on it, it would take only a day. Assuming everything's working.

Rina: Of course, I might have to fix things along the way.
Kiera: But we need to get started on it.
Rina: No time like the present to get started on it, yes?

As for food, while they might not give us food at the official outlets if we just go up and ask, we might be able to filch what we need under the noses of the partygoers who are too far gone to pay close attention to anything. Looking into this, we find that the food that's out there is being served up ready-made in bowls, rather than having sealed provisions doled out for people to prep and cook themselves. They're scrambling the eggs and watering the soup, institution style, most likely to stretch their supplies. So we may yet have to knock over a store or a supply room somewhere. What food supplies there are, we see they're being held under guard. Sensible. But how alert are the guards?

Valerie: You know …. There's a really well-equipped hospital aboard.

Arden looks and sees Valerie speaking to him from the crowd. Well, she's in his head but she's appearing as if she's in the crowd.

Valerie: I bet they have a scanner here.

Which Arden really wants access to so he can scan the crew for abnormalities. God knows, we've been exposed to Halcyon on Persephone and now Pax Lite on Pericles. Who knows what we might be carrying or how the two weapons will interact with each other? A scanner would go a long way in helping Arden figure out what to do next.

Arden: I'll bet they do.
Valerie: I think that you were actually in that scanner.
Arden: I was.

Way back when Joshua first crossed our path, yes.

Arden: That female doctor I met when I was here, she was here, wasn't she? I wonder if she's still here.
Valerie: She was kind of a whore. Like most of the girls you've met.
Arden: She was better than some.

Joshua eyes Arden having a one-sided conversation to empty air and leans over to Nika. So … take the access tunnels?

Nika: Rina.
Rina: Yes, ma'am.
Nika: The hatch that slammed shut when we were on our way through. Did you get actually get a look at who it was?
Rina: I didn't get a look at who, but I know where I can find it.

She pulls out her sketch mapping their route and the hatch.

Nika: Well, whoever it is, I think we should leave a message. In return for uncontaminated food and water, we will take anyone who is trying to get off the station. And if they are in fact cogent and coherent and not affected by this, we may be able to take some people out of here. If they are the aggressive ones … well.
Joshua: Militarily? Are we just … abandoning this place?
Arden: This is not a station of puppies that needs to be rescued.
Nika: It is a station of people who need help but we cannot get them help until we get out of here and head for Highgate.

Joshua points out that we'll be taking all the cogent and competent people who can run the station off the station and leaving it in the hands of people who cannot take care of themselves, mixed with people who are violent, while the Fed ship sits off alongside waiting to make a move on the station to take it over and/or harm those on board. Is that what we're doing?

Nika: Yes.
Rina: Joshua. The Alliance would have done it already if that was their plan.
Joshua: Not necessarily.
Arden: Did I actually hear you wanted to evacuate people off the station?

Nika repeats her position: If there are people still on the station who are in control of their own faculties and not affected by this, they may be shoring themselves up with food and such. If they wish to go, yes, great, we'll take them.

Nika: Otherwise basically what we'll let them know is that we are headed for Highgate. We will send help but we'll need help getting out.
Joshua: So can I explore the access tunnels and see if I can find them?
Arden: No, but you can help me get to the hospital so I can get a medical scan done.
Kiera: I'll go with you. I'd love to strap you down and scan you up.
Nika: Yes and Yes. Go armed. (to Arden) You can take Dr. Lawrence with you. (to Kiera) You are coming with us.

Joshua gathers up volunteers to go exploring the access tunnels with him. Arden bows out for himself and Lawrence.

Nika: You're probably safer in the access tunnels than anywhere else.
Arden: But they haven't flushed the access tunnels yet.
Nika: How do you know?
Arden: (points at the crowd) Because they said!
Rina: Oh, right. You're going to take a Pothead Stoner's word for it.
Arden: Better than someone who doesn't have any idea whatsoever if it's been done.
Nika: I think that someone who's smart enough to be staying out of sight that they're not the overly aggressive ones and they're clearly not the passive ones.
Arden: No, they could be the totally paranoid ones.
Nika: I'm willing to take that chance with your life.
Rina: I have no problem with that.
Joshua: Yay! Sorry Arden. After the tunnel incident, I'm feeling a little validated here.
Arden: You need all the validation you can get.
Joshua: That's right.
Rina: (to Nika) Since I'm going to be contacting these people anyway, do you want me to go with them?
Nika: No.
Rina: Okay.
Nika: We're not going to leave the message. We'll let them take the message.
Rina: All right. Then I'll write it out.
Nika: (to the others) Go armed. Go via the access tunnels, with Dr. Lawrence, to the hospital.

Kiera gives Dr. Lawerence a rebreather to shield him from the air. Arden's more worried about contracting something nasty by touch. Nika acknowledges his worries but in our experience, Pax derivatives don't affect Arden the way they do the rest of us.

Arden: But the point is, how is it going to affect me?
Nika: Wear gloves.
Rina: And a rebreather.
Nika: I don't know what else to do, Arden.

Because, really, there isn't anything more we can do. So let's go. Arden goes. We all head back to the ship. Kiera, Arden, Joshua, and Dr. Lawrence will grab what they need for a trip to the access tunnels and head out again. As ordered, Kiera will go armed. Rina gives them the message she's written, just in case. Nika pulls Joshua aside as they all make their way back to the tram.

Nika: Use your best judgment.
Joshua: Okay. Thank you.
Nika: Please don't say that to those two.
Joshua: (eyeing Arden) No, not today.
Nika: Thank you.
Arden: What?
Nika: Nothing.
Joshua: (clapping hands) Let's go.

We ride the tram back and find that someone has made it to our ship ahead of us. Several someones. The Skull Leader has made good on his promise. He and his gang have surrounded our ship and are banging on our cargo ramp with their improvised weapons and their clubs. They look like they're here to get a big fat piece of us as payback. If we're going to get on with our plans for getting out of here, we'll have to go through them first.
