Background[edit]

A troublesome slave, the boy who would be Ferox was born to a slave in a knightly/equestrian/noble household. Due to jealousy on the part of the matron of the household, Ferox's mother and himself were sold separately and he never saw his mother again. His father, of course, was the patron of the household who had forced himself on his slave (all quite legal and proper). The boy reacted badly to being separated from his mother at such an early age, became surly and argumentative, and constantly brawled with the other slaves. He was on-sold as a badly behaved slave to a gladiatorial ludus. His fighting name was 'Ferox' ('ferocious') and he forgot his slave name completely. He doesn't know his mother's name, and only dimly remembers a woman with gold hair.

You can be as surly and badly behaved as you like but the savage discipline of the ludus will break you. You have to swear to accept 'blows, whipping, hot iron and to die by cold steel', and they're not joking. Ferox's hide bears the marks of this discipline, and he firmly believes that there is no torture equal to a lanistae breaking in a tyrone gladiator. There is simple mathematics in the gladiator school; if you can't be trained as a gladiator you can be a training tool for one they value (ie: you fight him and he kills you). This sort of simple fact was obvious even to a young Ferox. Most gladiators are inducted in a five year contract, but Ferox was sold as reject slave and condemned 'damnatio et ludus' (condemned to the school until freed by the game sponsor). It took fourteen years before he cracked and escaped.
