Thomas was a deeply troubled child. His father was an ardent purist of the Silver Flame and decided that Thomas's mother's brand of magic was heresy, just before her death during childbirth. And so, Thomas was sent into a large orphanage where he was ridiculed for his frailness and strangeness. A traveling professor caught sight of Thomas's shadow magic awakening and got him packed off to Arcanix on scholarship. He graduated with high honors and finally, after several failured enterprises, found himself a redshirt aboard the Forgotten Freedom.
