Ilya Ivanov on wikipedia

An aging Russian man with a thick mustache and narrow, bushy goatee, Ivanov is a Russian-educated bioligist. A full professor by the age of 37, he quickly came to the attention of the Czar and worked for the royal family, breeding finer horses through techniques in artificial insemination that he had pioneered. His research reached wide acclaim around the world and caused him to receive a number of international visitors. He fled Russia for Paris when the February Revolution hit Petrograd, but returned in time to throw his support behind the October Revolution. This earned him a place at the State Experimental Vetinary Institute and, 6 years later, when Stalin had secured his power as General Secretary of the Communist Party, the steel man selected Ivanov to bring his dream to life: a dream of half-man, half-ape super-warriors, "insensible to pain, resistant [to injury] and indifferent about the quality of food they eat."

Ivanov spent the next year travelling between labs in Georgia and Guinea before our Intrepid Explorers got word of his experiments and a fatal encounter with Brendan Lewis Cook sent him on his final voyage.
