The hero is a man being kept on life support in an underground complex: possibly a bunker of alien technology or crashed ship that he discovered, or possibly just Super Science! In order to live a "normal" life, he hooks himself up to a robot duplicate through a full-sensory link and pilots it around. Almost none of his friends and acquaintances know that the "person" they interact with is actually just a remote drone. Those few that know they are dealing with a lifelike robot mostly believe that he is "only" a human consciousness downloaded into a single robot body.
The duplicates don't have exceptional powers - just enhanced strength, senses and durability - but he could switch to using "advanced" models with specific power sets as the need arises. One of his major advantages is that if his drone is destroyed (which most people will assume means he's dead!) then he can simply activate a new one. His disadvantage is that the signal controlling the drone is vulnerable to being interrupted or detected, and although it works pretty much anywhere on Earth, his drones will just deactivate if forced out of range (such as by leaving the planet).
