Hahne-Kedar Venture Capital
HKVC is a subsidiary of the Hahne-Kedar conglomerate focusing on venture capital for new startup businesses, a way of the parent broadening their investments without increasing their risk exposure too greatly. Furthermore, it serves as a channel to field-test concept equipment on a small scale before large-scale production.
It came into being in 2178, shortly after the conflict at Torfan, though any links between that event and its inception are strongly denied. Despite that refutation, it has invested in a number of projects associated with veterans of Torfan. Senior VP at Hahne-Kedar and MD of HKVC, Angeline Kessler asserts that "the time was right for H-K to move into this sort of venture supporting Alliance veterans as they apply their knowhow in the civilian arena. We already have strong contacts with the military, why should the good work end when people are discharged?"
HKVC has an arrangement with Penumbra whereby certain high-value pilot equipment is field-tested by the principals as the constraints of their missions allow. Each of these field tests are bound by strict NDAs and intellectual property controls.
Ortiz Exploration
A company created by retired Alliance Navy Captain Hector Ortiz (Russell's grandfather) in 2158, OE focuses primarily on exploration and surveying but also has a side-line in salvage and recovery. Leveraging it's founder and CEO's contacts in the Navy, it seeks out viable worlds for resource extraction and colonisation. As survey returns from Alliance probes and patrols are declassified, OE takes that raw data and mines it for potential leads for its explorator fleet to follow up.
It was under it's auspices as a salvager that it was involved in the recovery of the SSV Salamanca, the shipwreck that would become Penumbra's flagship. Hector Ortiz negotiated terms with Kirroe Tuditan and acted as liason to the Systems Alliance. An accomodation was reached whereby Kirroe was able to recover the vessel to an Alliance shipyard for repair and refit, as well as removal of proprietary military technology.
OE has a standing arrangement with Penumbra for priority access to all its survey data gathered in the course of its travel around the Milky Way.
Minor Investors
Penumbra also has a range of minor investors who have contributed smaller sums for a commensurate return:
- The Tyr Corporation - Earth-based weapons R&D company that has been around since the 2060s.
- Sedairis Industries - Illium-based company that specializes in the production of omni-tools.
- Axis Nano - Citadel-based nanotechnology R&D firm.
- Vigil - Hanar law firm, bounty office on the side.
- Dalatrass Genmeia - Matriarch of a smaller salarian clan seeking more influence in the galaxy in order to improve her position in the Union.
- Devlin Voss - wealthy philanthropist who made his money selling arms.
