Personality[edit]

Portal (aka Travis Cochrane) is, in many ways, your normal 23 year old middle American guy.

Travis grew up in a middle-class home in suburban Seattle, his parents are still married, and he has two sisters (one older and one younger). He has recently graduated from Western Washington University with a bachelor's degree in journalism. There would really be nothing overly remarkable about him if not for the small fact that he can rip holes in the spacial continuum, letting himself and others travel instantaneously from point to point...

Travis is a good kid at heart. He loves the fact that he has super powers and likes to use them at every opportunity. This can get him into trouble at times.

In the field he tends to look to others. Travis realizes that he's pretty new to the whole superhero gig, and working with the great Talon has him pretty floored. So he just tries to follow orders and look out for the welfare of his teammates.

Physical Appearance[edit]

Lean, athletic, and of medium height (5' 9"), Travis is a good looking young man. His features strongly lean towards a nordic heritage with tousled blond hair and light blue eyes.

An all-black costume covering most everything but his hair, gives him a distinctive, yet low-profile image when out on a mission.

Battle Tactics[edit]

Portal plays a mostly support role when in the field. Between his group telportals, his remote portal viewing and his attack redirecting portals, he can cover a wide variety of logistical, reconnaissance, and defensive roles.

In combat he will hang back and keep an eye out for any attacks that might be threatening his teammates. He will then intercept the attack with one of his portals and send it back where it came from! (well that's the theory at least...)

Heroic Motivations[edit]

Thrill Seeker

While Travis is a good guy, and wants to make the world a better place, he mostly just loves having super-powers and gets a kick out of using them.

Allegiance[edit]

Travis' allegiances lie firstly with his friends and teammates. If any are in danger he will do most anything to help them out. Secondly, he strives to be a good person and make the world a better place. Travis figures that his powers are a gift and he should do whatever he can to use them to help others. Lastly Travis realizes that while the world is not fair, he now has a chance to balance the scales a bit. Whenever he sees injustice, he strives to make things right.

History & Heroic Origin[edit]

Travis first manifested his powers at the age of 16 when he saved the lifes of his sister, his mother and himself.

They had gone downtown to shop for clothes for the upcoming school-year. Unfortunately, and unbeknownst to them, at the same time some super-creep had gone beserk and was ripping things up. As they were leaving a department store, a bolder-sized piece of rubble fell towards them. Instictively, Travis threw up his arm in an assumedly futile attempt to ward it off. They all cowered, waiting to be crushed under the chunk of concrete. But it never came. As they looked up to see why they were still alive, they saw the instument of their doom falling a few dozen feet away in the middle of the empty street. Travis was the only one who had seen the air rip open at his gesture, and the chunk of concrete dissappear into the gap in space...

Travis soon found himself being shipped off by his parents to the Institute for Superhuman Research and Training, where he spent the next year training and being examined by the institute's staff. As far as he was concerned it was a year long field day! Travis loved having superpowers and was always looking for new ways to use them. The Institute was the perfect place for this. He also had a blast hanging out with other superpowered kids. Travis became fast friends with a girl by the name of Darcy Choi who has powers of insubstantiality and light control. He also managed to cross paths with a kid who went by the name of Opticon. For whatever reason (not the least of which being that Opticon is a self-aggrandizing, pompous jerk) the two of them almost always came to blows when they were together. A fact that was exacerbated by Travis being able to reflect his optic blasts, and Opticon being immune to his own powers. The two were always at each other, but not able to effect each other.

After leaving The Institute, Travis finished up highshcool and enrolled in college at Western. He managed to keep his powers pretty low-key, even with his roommate always trying to convince him that they should be peeking in on the co-ed showers... It was while he was at college that he made his first big superhero debut, when he foiled a jewel heist by the notorious Red Raven. It was also when he ran afoul of the supervillianess Bad Penny, who has taken a fancy to him ever since.

Now that Travis is a member of the Last Watch and a full-time superhero, he is in heaven.

3x3 NPCs[edit]

FRIENDS[edit]

  • Kira O'Connor: Kira was Travis' high school social-studies teacher. She impressed upon him most of his desire for justice and righting wrongs. She is now his main mentor, and someone that he always seeks out for help with moral and ethical dilemmas.
  • Alton Kaufmann: Alton and Travis were randomly assigned as dorm roommates, and they hit it off right from the start and were inseperable for most of thier college careers. Alton studied criminology and then switched to law. He has just finished up law-school and, after passing the bar, has become an assistant DA in Seattle.
  • Will'o'wisp (Darcy Choi): Travis met Darcy at The Institute, they dated briefly, but found out they were better at being friends. Darcy can transform herself into a luminous ball of mist, and while in that form is insubstantial and can control light. They spend a lot of time together and usually confide their rlationship problems to each other. Darcy is not that into her powers, and only tends to use them in an emergency.

CONTACTS[edit]

  • Dr. Hillary Dale: Dr. Dale is a scientist at The Institute. She is one of the main people who studies and catalogues the various powers and abilities of the people who come there. A brilliant inventor who took a liking to Travis, Dr Dale created for him a protective suit with a few other goodies thrown in.
  • Karen Falkner: Travis met Karen at the School of Communications as a fellow journalism major. For Travis journalism was a path of least resistance to his college degree. For Karen it was a passion. They dated for most of college, and broke up amicably. Karen is now an up-and-coming reporter for CNN.
  • Martin Santos: When Travis joined the Last Watch, he moved into the Cascade neigborhood. One of his neighbors is a regular beat cop. For the first few months they would just exchange pleasantries when they saw each other in the hall or while doing laundry. When Portal saved the life of a young Officer Santos, the policeman recognized his savior and Travis knew that his secret ID had been compromised. Not wanting to have this hanging over them, Travis, knocked on Officer Santos' door with two large pizzas, a case of beer and couple bad kung-fu movies. The two hang out together every so often and try to help each other out on a proffesional basis whenever possible.

ENEMIES[edit]

  • Opticon: While at The Institute, Travis got along pretty well with most everyone there. The notable exception was a kid who now goes by the name of Opticon. He has optical blasts and enhanced visual senses, and for whatever reason, he and Portal Do Not Get Along. Now that they are out in the world, they have an ongoing rivalry. Opticon seems to be pretty mean spirited and will often go out of his way to make Portal look bad.
  • The Red Raven: When in Miami for spring break, during his last year in college, Travis noticed someone scaling the building across the way from his hotel. Portal managed to get the drop on the man, and in his first highly publicized solo outing, single-handedly foiled the notorious jewel-thief, The Red Raven. Red Raven is currently doing 10 years in a state penitentiary, and spends his time plotting his revenge.
  • Bad Penny (Penelope Stone) With multi-colored spiked hair, fishnet stockings and lots of leather that manages to not cover very much of her body, Bad Penny just likes to make trouble. And with her probability effecting powers, she's very good at it. She has managed to take a likeing to Portal ("He's so clean-cut and all-american, and soooo corruptable..."). Unfortunately, she's not his type, but she's also not one to take "No" for an answer...

ORGANIZATIONS[edit]

  • The Institute for Superhuman Research and Training: Usually just called "The Insitute", this is a non-profit group, dedicated to helping young supers learn to control and utilize their various abilities. It is not clear where their funding comes from, but they seem legitimate... at least so far...
