Lt Commander Mena, Daughter of Kovan and T'Rehu[edit]

a character in the Star Trek: Mercury game

Backstory[edit]

  • Would have been T'Mena when the captain first reviewed the crew dossiers before assignment; she's very recently divorced. Also dropping the matrimonial T is itself an unusual choice, even in that case.
  • She was already deployed at the Klingon border aboard USS Ushaan when Vulcan was destroyed. Most of her blood relatives were on Vulcan, and none among the ~10,000 successful evacuees. Her mate, Tarock, was a colonial administrator on Altair VI and became a prominent politician among the Vulcan diaspora.
  • T'Mena faced difficulty reconciling 'irrational' waves of survivor's guilt and pressure from her mate in joining him in rebuilding Vulcan society, and took a sabbatical to P'jem to seek Kohlinar. She was thunderously unsuccessful; the abbot advised her that she was trying to run away from emotional stimulus rather than push through it to rationality, which was a self-defeating endeavor.
  • Returned to Starfleet against her mate's requests, and quickly sought to join the engineering teams poring over the wreckage and recordings from the attack, becoming fascinated with the confirmation that the Romulans were indeed long-estranged Vulcans.
  • Was attached to Operation Falconer, a Starfleet effort to contact the Romulan Empire and at least establish relations during the political aftershocks of Nero's rampage and convey the revelations of (far) future disaster. While it would be excessive to call it an overture of friendship, the operation at least succeeded in normalizing political relations with the Romulan Star Empire beyond the technical cease-fire that created the neutral zone - along with giving the Romulans a chance to show their renewed strength (having already benefitted from data sent by Nero), including the T'Laru-class carrier - warp-capable, cloaking mini-starbases.
  • Has been fascinated by Romulan culture - if not particularly impressed by their xenophobia and deceptive traditions - ever since, and has been gathering as many bits and pieces of Romulan history and popular culture that she can. In their own way, the Romulans survived the loss of Vulcan centuries ago already, and she takes hope and what she grudgingly admits is comfort from that.
  • She also really wants to reverse engineer the cloaking device to close that technology gap, and spends a fair fraction of her downtime on experimental attempts. Which may generate plot by going badly, sometimes.
  • Her mate, frustrated with her insistence on remaining in Starfleet, has recently requested separation from her, which she has decisively accepted. She has found her thoughts occasionally wandering to various members of the Romulan delegation she interacted with, most notably one Subcommander Liviana Charvanek, but is not actively searching for another match just yet.

Distinctions[edit]

(use as d8 or d4 with a plot point)

"Fascinating."[edit]

A dual-edged remark among Vulcans imperfectly translated to English, reflecting engagement with new or unexpected input or derisive dismissal of the nonsensical or irrelevant. (The latter sense usually hinders, but could be normal when calling bullshit, or the positive sense could hinder when following red herrings or intellectual honeypot traps.)

Dedicated Officer[edit]

Mena has tended to choose Starfleet over other aspects of her life, to the point of breaking her marriage. She can be relied upon to work well in heirarchical team settings, but is not always the best-suited to dealing with civilians and tends to be overly suspicious of the actions of the Federation's rivals.

Cracking Shell[edit]

Mena can surprise others with an emotional response or at least demonstrate an unexpected tolerance for emotional reasoning; alternatively she may have an overwhelming emotional response at an inopportune time.

Talents[edit]

Command Talent[edit]

  • So that's what that button does. Fascinating.
When encountering unfamiliar technology, may spend 1 PP to step up or double engineering, or divert stress another character would take from interacting with it to herself.

Open Talent[edit]

  • Facilitator
May transfer up to 3 PP in a scene between any 2 characters she's in communication with to enhance teamwork. For each additional pair, or when transferring to or from herself, she must step up Exhausted or Angry.
  • The Vulcan Brush-off
She can step up Afraid, Angry or Insecure to deny them from the GM's dice pool without spending a Plot Point (unlike Pushing, she doesn't get to roll them herself either).
