Story[edit]

Origin Issue[edit]

Origin: The World has always been a bit more unusual than history had recorded. The family known as the Pattersons were one such example. Their origins are unclear though many speculate at what historical figures might have been part of their bloodline. The modern families first known appearance though was documented in the journal’s of the Continental Army. A Philadelphia tavern owner of prodigious strength and good cheer, he organized supplies and good cheer for the nearly starving men at Valley Forge. It was said that the cold seemed to vanish when he came calling, bringing food, blankets, and warm drinks to the beleaguered army. (Cold Absorption)

From there, the family grew and spread out. There were often Pattersons fighting on the frontiers or frontlines, not always good men or women but always noticeable. In most recently, in the Second World War, Captain Steel was among the superhuman volunteers that the US sent to help fight Nazi magic and super science. His grandfather was able to absorb kinetic energy and that made him a nightmare on the battlefield. After the war, he married Liberty Lass and became one of the postwar wave of crime fighters. While his career was long and varied, one of the things he was best known for was turning Senator McCarthy’s car into a 2 inch cube after one of his friends was dragged in front of the House unAmerican Committee. He died with his boots on in the early eighties, his abilities giving him a remarkable vigor for his age. One last attack from the old Nazi crew in a Volcano lair from which none of them escaped.

His father took up Superheroics and political activism with a will. As Starlight, he was powered by light and capable of flight like his mother. He had a successful career for decades and semi-retired to teach at a heroic academy. (He refused to be his father) It was in the aftermath of one super brawl where he met an opinionated paramedic who would become Paul’s mother. She had three sons, of which Paul is the middle child and the one who took after her more than the others. He was the only one whose powers didn’t show up initially, as there wasn’t a huge number of free floating injuries and they didn’t expect such an esoteric absorption talent.

His elder brother is an active and top tier superhero called Capacitance. His electro-absorption abilities make him a remarkably potent force. His younger brother was the only one to avoid super heroics. He moved to the Arctic and is using his heat absorption abilities to slowly freeze the polar ice caps and create ice based art that is truly remarkable. But his father is not his father’s only child and neither was his grandfather an only child. Who knows who might be out there.

Aspect: Mysterious Bloodline

Issue One[edit]

Phase 1: Living around other heroes' families, we had grown up having each other’s backs. When there is danger all around, you learn who you can depend on and first of all it is family. His elder brother, Mike was always the first to stand up to a bully or help someone out of a jam. His younger brother Jake was always the dreamer and definitely the funny one. Mom was always there with a kind word and a cold compress. And Dad, well Dad could fix anything.

While he has a few bad dreams every now and again for the couple of times some goon managed snatch him on the way to school, he never doubted his family cared about it. From the way they left those compounds, he would say it was quite a bit.

Aspect: Super Supportive Family

Issue Two[edit]

Phase 2: Growing up in the Community (how the Superheroic social set refer to themselves during off hours and in mixed company) you have a slightly different upbringing. Learning the names and descriptions of his Father’s rogues galleries, along with the symbols associated with an array of secret societies using the same sort of flash cards that other parents use for poison and other hazardous warning symbols was cool. And let's face it, when the family walk was done via rooftop running with Uncle Markus, that was exciting and had been a great way to get around the city.

He might not have discovered his powers until far later, he spent much of his early years working with the best training his parents could help him find. His after school activities often involved intense physical workouts and 6 years with one of the most sadistic Muay Thai instructors the world has ever known. A man he is convinced used to be a superhero who went by the Tiger’s Knee, but he would never confirm it.

Aspect: Prepared for the Extraordinary

Issue Three[edit]

Phase 3: Once he moved out of his parents place and started sharing an apartment with his older brother. Unfortunately, his brother’s nemesis decided to doorstep him one day and had not expected Paul to be there. The ensuing fight led to the Electrocutioner falling off the balcony and Paul trying to staunch the bleeding from a broken lightning impaling his abdomen.

This was when his own ability decided to manifest itself, absorbing his trauma and helping push out the piece of jagged steel. When his brother found him, he was propped up on the couch and drinking a beer. “Bet you are regretting the carpet now. Told you to go with hardwoods.” His brother dragged him to a discrete clinic but he was laughing while he did it.

Aspect: Unimpressed by the Unusual
