Jason Miller is taking a few courses at the university, but he also works at this really cool coffee shop nearby, they have all kinds of funky antiques, b movie props, even a few super hero souvenirs up on the walls, some in cases. He's been there a couple of years and a few months ago, one of the owners, Hannah, asked him if he could keep an eye out for some more decorative kitsch. He did a few tours of some cool consignment places, brought back a few moderately interesting items, then, in a little hole in the wall he hadn't noticed before, he found the Amulet. It was set in gold with some kind of silvery traces on it, and it was on a woven braid of gold. It had several mismatched sizes of gem in it, all different colours and cuts, quite a strange design really. The little old man behind the till barely looked up from his book when Jason brought it to the counter, just muttered "Twenty bucks", which was exactly how much cash Jason had on him. Jason took the Amulet home since he didn't have a shift at the coffee shop for a couple of days. That night he was going to put an Amulet selfie up on his Snapchat story, but as soon as he put it on, he heard/felt a strange whisper in his mind. It said "Jason" and then suddenly he felt like putting the fingers of his right hand in a weird position. When he did, the red gem on the Amulet lit up, a deep warmth ran through his arm, and a thin red energy beam shot out of his palm and melted a hole in the bathroom mirror.

Jason decided to keep the Amulet. Currently, he's not really sure if it is actually talking to him or if it's all in his mind. He's learned a few more finger positions, some with both hands. He can fly! And there's a force field! He kind of has to hold the force field in his mind.

Now, Jason is only about 50% hipster. The rest of him is a pretty serious comic/SF/superhero geek, so there was no way he wasn't going to run out and grab a cape and a mask and start fighting some crime! He tried to go back to the shop where he bought the Amulet, but it wasn't there any more -- the two stores that has been on either side of it were next door to each other now. It's been working pretty well so far too, he froze a mugger's hand to a streetlight and called the cops on him.

A couple of times, he thought he saw some shadowy figures lurking around near his apartment and the coffee shop, but on closer looks, there is nothing there.
