Byzantium: Nightmares Undreamed Of

Tomás, the Bloody-Handed Bastard[edit]

aka Bloody Tomás, Red Tom, or just The Bastard

Neutral Fighter Level 2 (XP: 2 of 3 milestones)

Appearance: Medium height lithe man. Longish greasy semi-curly black hair pulled into a messy bun with a slightly crooked hawkish nose. He is often seen sweat stained clothes of browns and grays. Tomás tries to keep his face shaved save for his thin mustache and goatee. Besides that his hands are red, blood red. Wearing gloves is only a short-term fix as the curse upon him causes them to slowly turn crimson and drip over time.

Motivation: Tomás fights the incursions to free himself from the bloody curse.

Bourgeois Bastard Born of Ambition[edit]

A bastard born of a union between a well respected city official and his mistress, Tomás has both friends and enemies all throughout the city. Many he knows of; there are even more he doesn’t.

I Work Oddjobs in This Mad City I Love[edit]

Tomás has learned by living on the strange streets and alleys of Byzantium that morals take a backseat when it comes to having a full belly and a soft bed.

Help, I’ve Fallen and I Can’t Get Out![edit]

While it’s no secret that Tomás suffered from his ordeals in a Nightmare Incursion, the scars run deeper than the blood red hands and dim wits that he returned with. There are many mornings waking in strange places and prior nights that Tom cannot recall...

Skills[edit]

Fighters are skilled at foraging, hunting, labouring, scavenging, soldiering, and keeping their equipment in good working order. Tomás has as of late picked up on hiding and moving quietly as well as picking locks.

Special Abilities[edit]

  • Armour does not count as encumbering items to you, as long as you are wearing it (but shields do).
  • When you attack an enemy, if your attack roll is a miss, you still inflict your damage as normal, and if your attack roll is good enough to hit, you inflict your damage twice, as if you had made two successful attacks.

Spells[edit]

  • Aura of Intimidation - Constantly surrounds him. Normal people are cowed in his presence, either having heard of him, or are witness to his curse, or simply able to read his body-language and that of those around him and able to tell that he's not someone to be approached lightly. This aura enables him to not have to suffer fools as much as others might (though the truly persistent ones always find a way to overcome their fears and approach anyway), but it also requires some extra effort for him to cross the boundary his fierceness commands and make a different connection. Perhaps the greatest boon of the wide berth people tend to give him is that he can ascertain fairly quickly who is unordinary, because they seem inured to his effect on lesser people.

Notes[edit]

  • Family
    • Father: Herman vanDermötten - An elected alderman of the city. Reluctantly owes his success to a criminal element.
    • ’Mother’: Carla vanDermötten - Ambitious and cunning. Involved Herman with criminal org with intent to raise their station.
    • Half-Brother: Wolfhard vanDermötten - Loving brother who secretly visits Tomás often.
    • True Mother: Mademoiselle Gisele Boutet - Recently reconnected with. Madame of a brothel.
  • Friends
    • Carnegie Solomon - Proprietor of The Lucky Foot, an occult shop in Byzantium. Tomás came to Carn after he was cursed, they’ve been friends ever since. Carnegie is a huge black-tailed jackrabbit (7’ tall standing up) with a taste for exotic tobacco. He’s also a vampire. He and Tom never broach that subject though.
  • Things
    • Yeah I think that if Tom has one thing that he takes care of it’s this saber. It’s a graduation gift from the DiTerlo’s School of the Art, the fencing school that he attended. While the blade and scabbard are sharpened, cleaned, and oiled there is nothing special for these moments (silent drawing of weapon). That scrape of metal on metal occurs, that unmistakable sound of a blade being drawn. It’s done slow and carefully though so it’s fairly quiet but still happens.
