Are you going lifting the gender restrictions, or would everyone be playing male characters? From what I've read, (granted it was the Drizzt underdark trilogy.) just being born female grants a minor elevation in status to one's brothers. For one such as myself that prefers to play female characters, would she be just the lowest ranked female cleric, or could she be something other than cleric/paladin thus marking her extremely low rank? - StarHawk

There won't be any gender restriction. While being female places you above males at a similar level of influence, it doesn't change the fact that you haven't got many allies and you're considered a pawn. It really only gives you the ability to treat an entire division of society like dirt, which may not be the best course of action. In fact it puts you in a significantly more dangerous position. There can only be one matron mother you see, so being born a girl makes it more likely that you'll be murdered than your brothers.
Drow of the Underdark has lots of details on drow society, and I'm sure somebody in your circle has a copy if you're interested in learning more. Not that I will necessarily be working from it as my only resource or treating canon as sacrosanct. - Bill
