Background

Josephine Gabrielle Arceneaux was born on 21 October 1839 to Frenchwoman Sophie Desirée Arseneau and Englishman Jonathan Randolph Crane, in the city of Strasbourg, Alsace, France. It was not uncommon for the French natives of Alsace (or Alsatia, as it is sometimes called) to speak fluent German and such was the case for Josephine's mother. Josephine's father spoke English and Josephine grew up in a bilingual household on French soil without learning French as a native tongue.

Five feet and nine inches in her stockinged feet, she is leaner than the voluptous standard of the day and is certainly more accustomed to physical action over cultivated weakness. Her hair is somewhat shorter than is the norm for a woman of her era and she wears it in a ballerina bun or a simple French twist. Her clothing is likewise unconventional, leaning in a decidedly mannish direction of shirtwaists tucked into walking skirts or split riding skirts--even trousers on occasion--and her shoes are either ladies' leather ankle boots or men's town boots. Josephine travels with a steamer trunk which she drops off in a secure location and stocks a leather bag that is not quite haversack, not quite valise, from the trunk instead.

Steamer Trunk

It's a battered thing, having been knocked around and about the globe for years, salvaged from a Parisian alley over a decade ago during a quick layover between jobs. The contents vary with Josephine's fortunes but when fully stocked, it's got everything she needs. Go here for the trunk inventory.
