Civilization

Mesak is one of the Stellar Nations

Doldara is the only inhabited planet. It was colonized long before modern terraforming technology existed in human space, as a result many subterranean settlements exists as well as "bubble" cities. Since that time the planet has been terraformes and is not completely Earth like.

People and Culture

The people of Mesak share many of the physical traits of those from Eberon including the red hair which was an early trait of Eborian genetic tampering. Culturally, The Mesaks are exuberantly diplomatic, a response to the oppressive monarchy that they suffered while under the control of Eberon. Central to the Mesak culture is the ideal of duty. It is accepted that at some points a person is required to make sacrifices for the sake of the larger community. This attitude has made the military a popular profession, and Mesak boasts; the largest most highly skilled Navy in known space. Most of the people are bilingual in both Solar and Pentex.

History

In 2171 Mesak was colonized by the Eborian Empire. The system was originally used as a labor/prison camp to send political dissenters. Mesak was chosen because it is rich in valuable material and at the time it was far away from any other civilized system.

Mesak remained under the control of Eberon until it was liberated by Pharaoh forces during the Stellar War. At this time Mesak was able to quickly organize a resistance group and began using captured Eborian ships to harass the shipping lines used by the Empire.

After the war, Mesak joined the Galactic Senate. After the system joined the senate a move was made to "civilize" the more roguish elements of Mesak society. Also, many captains and pilots who had helped in the war effort, found themselves labeled pirates by the new government and were not recognized for their war efforts. This lead to a rift in the society and caused major civil unrest.

Despite the conflict within the system, Mesak did engage in exploration and in 2232 a Mesak explorer discovered the weren race in the Kuth System. Mesak went to great efforts to ensure that the Galactic Senate became quickly involved in the introduction of the new race, cautious after the discovery of the t'sa had lead to a war.

In 2244 the conflict on Mesak had come to a head and a group of pirates announced that they were leaving the system and established a colony on Fade. The pirates declared that they were not a member of the senate and wished to remain independent. The senate saw the existence of a rogue state as a threat to galactic stability and demanded that Mesak handle the situation, and bring it to an end.

In 2251 Mesak ends diplomatic negotiations with the Faders and preform a number of very successful and devastating attacks on the colony. The attacks have the unforeseen effect of uniting the various pirate clans that composed the governing bodies of Fade. After their initial successes, Mesak is not able to force the colony to surrender. This conflict is known as the Pirate War.

By 2268 it is clear that there is no quick end to the war and the people of Mesak are growing tired of the conflict. Mesak hires a company of mercenaries from Halo who do manage to turn the tide of battle back in Mesak's favor. Not wishing to risk further warfair, Mesak offers peace to Fade and acknowledges their independence. This move was not popular with the Galactic Senate who still feared Fade as a rogue state. As punishment, Mesak lost half of its seats in the senate for the next ten years. Despite the senates disapproval, Cyintha Barnet, the Prime Minster of Mesak at the time, gained amazing popular support for ending the war. She retained her seat as Prime Minister for the next 5 terms (15 years).
