Background

Josephine Gabrielle Arceneaux was born on 21 October 1839 to Frenchwoman Sophie Desirée Arseneau and Englishman Jonathan Randolph Crane, in the city of Strasbourg, Alsace, France. It was not uncommon for the French natives of Alsace (or Alsatia, as it is sometimes called) to speak fluent German and such was the case for Josephine's mother. Josephine's father spoke English and Josephine grew up in a bilingual household on French soil without learning French as a native tongue.

Physical Description

In appearance, Josephine is tall for a woman. Standing at five feet and nine inches in her stockinged feet, she is considerably leaner than the voluptous figure required of the day. She is certainly more accustomed to physical action over cultivated weakness and she is tougher than she appears. Her hair is a dark brown, catching red glints in the sunlight, and her brown eyes are bright and observant. Her complexion is clear, her features even, and her fair skin is a sturdy type that tans well instead of burning. Her hair is somewhat shorter than is the norm for a woman of her era and she wears it in a ballerina bun or a simple French twist.

Her clothing is likewise unconventional, leaning in a decidedly mannish direction of shirtwaists tucked into walking skirts or split riding skirts--even trousers on occasion--and her shoes are either ladies' leather ankle boots or men's town boots. Josephine prefers practicality over fashion, comfort over convention whenever possible and though this has led to some raised eyebrows and scandalized sensibilities, she feels the mobility, utility, and self-sufficiency thus gained more than compensates for any misconceptions about her character.

Psychological Profile

Possessed of imagination and a keen curiosity for the world around her, Josephine channels her mental energy into observation, research, and problem solving. She was raised by scholar parents who nurtured and indulged her native intelligence and if there is one area in which Josephine is guilty of the sin of pride, it is her intellect. She relies on it heavily to guide her through the vagaries of life such as befall an unaccompanied woman in this society and so far, it has served her well. As such, she is more apt to do for herself than rely on others for their assistance, looking askance at such dependency as weakness and a failing of character. She is indefagitable, creative, a maverick and a survivor, and though the odds are stacked against a woman in a man's world, she is supremely confident in her ability to win through in her endeavors.

Steamer Trunk

It's a battered thing, having been knocked around the globe for years, salvaged from a Parisian alley over a decade ago during a quick layover between jobs. The contents vary with Josephine's fortunes but when fully stocked, it's got everything she needs. Go here for the trunk inventory.
