Tasha Mir was orphaned at four years old, or kicked out of her home at eight, or ran away at nine--the story changes every time she tells it, as do the names of her parents. She may not even remember the truth anymore. One thing never changes: when she was thirteen, living alone on the streets of Risen Rock, begging for scraps and contemplating selling her body to earn a few silver, Mama Jona took her in and taught her a trade.

At first it was just burglary and picking pockets. No one got hurt. Then gang rivalries flared up, and Mama Jona stood for Big Duke when Croc moved on him, and Croc's thugs murdered two of her girls for it, and from there things just happened. That's how Tasha tells it, how she learned to kill.

Time passed, blood flowed, until it didn't, and things settled down. The city guard resumed patrols, many of them taking coin from Big Duke. By then Tasha was right at the heart of Mama Jona's most loyal band of followers.

On an autumn night not long after the street wars were settled, Tasha picked a man stopping in town for the night as an easy mark. Well-dressed and unarmed, he was clearly a fool for traveling alone. Even better, as she closed in behind him, he turned a corner into a dark alley, allowing a perfect opportunity. She had almost caught him, another thirty paces down the empty alley, when he turned suddenly and said, "Really?"

"What?"

"You didn't even try, dear. Usually sneaking up on someone involves sneaking. Something I understand you criminal urchin sorts can usually do well. Maybe you aren't a very good one."

She drew her dagger at the insult. "Oh, I assure you, I'm a good one. And I'm not your dear."

"Now there's the spirit." With a flick of his wrist, he had a short sword in his hand. He took a step toward her. "Now--"

She muttered an expletive and turned to run.

"Hey! Come on, let's talk!" And then he muttered some gibberish, and she was stuck in a web.

She could hear his footfalls stop as he came to the edge of the web he had conjured beneath her, but she dared not turn around to face him. Her heart was racing as her mind rushed through all the terrifying warnings Mama Jona had ever given her about sorcerers and warlocks.

The man chuckled, which sent a chill down her spine, and then he said, "Gods, you're barely more than a child."

She mustered up her defiance. "Let me loose from this and I'll show you how much more I am."

"Guess I'd better not let you loose then." A moment passed in silence. "Look, kid, since I just got jumped by a dangerous rogue in the streets, I clearly need a bodyguard. I'm here for five days. Why don't I hire you?"

"What? I don't--"

"Ten Valors," he said, flashing the gold coins in the dim moonlight.

"Ah--" Tasha found herself unable to speak for a moment. She rarely came across men who carried that much coin on them. "What if what you said is true, and I'm not very good?"

"Then maybe you'll die protecting me," he said. "I'll have to hire whoever kills you, since they're better." He grinned then, holding his hand forward. "Take the coins. Make some honest money."

She hesitated, then grabbed the gold. "It's a lot of gold," she explained. "Doesn't mean I care how honest it is."

"Fair enough."

They walked in silence for a while.

"I never seen magic before," Tasha said, breaking the uncomfortable silence.

"Pray you don't see it again," the man answered. "I don't do tricks."

"I understand," she answered. "What if I wanted to learn?"

He did not answer for a while, but when he did, he said, "That would be different."
