Issue # 3:3 : "ON THE LAMB", March 14, 2007.

    SCENE: "the carsh site's fiery blaze"
    "Alright, listen up, Khanates! The Blackstone Penatentury Mag-Lev crashed exactly one hundred forty seven minutes ago. The standard rule is that average foot speed over uneven mountainous ground barring injuries is 4 miles-per-hour, Neg-Bands could be down - so that means there ARE NO RULES Khanates! That gives us a radius of six miles to the ends of the Earth!
    What I want from each and every one of you is a hard-target search of every gas station, residence, warehouse, farmhouse, henhouse, outhouse and doghouse in that area.
    Checkpoints go up at fifteen miles. Your fugitive's are the world's worst. They are Criminals, theives, thugs, murderers, kidnappers, madmen, villains, vigilantees, mutants and masterminds. Rank of Shock-Lord goes to each Khan who brings back a head.
    Go get them."

    SCENE: "somewhere in the mid-western wilderness"
    They've all been on the run before. Some from the FCPD, some from Freedom City's S.T.A.R. units, some from super villains, and some from the Allies of WWII!!
    This is different.
    This time they run or die. They were to be transferred to the LOCKDOWN facitlity, but in their escape they witnessed the arrival of the enemy - the alien scum that wouldn't be taking prisoners...
    Schwartgeist's best laid plans are now strung along the retreat of the fugitives that now run to the four winds. S.H.A.D.O.W. may be a light at the end of their tunnel but not until the offer is extended. Freedom City is nearly 2000 miles away. But in the darkness between spot light search cannons, the only city in the world not lowered to rubble might as well be a galaxy away.
    Will this be the fiery forge or the roasting oven for our "heroes"?

Issue # 2:3 : "LIGHNING STRIKES TWICE", March 7, 2007.

  • RECAP: Before... a simpler time... a "Golden Age"... Nearly 7 years ago Thornwolfe met his greatest defeat. It was on Freedom City's docks. The massive wolf-beast had aquired a bounty plundered full of artifacts of value to certain eccentric villains. The items within the container were of no concern to Vigo, but he know they were worth something and it was the Maestro that would be his payday! When all was said and done the deal was almost complete. The Maestro had sent his man "the Paper Master" to make the deal. In the background Thornwolfe's "Mutts" and the Maestro's "Notes" watched with tommy-guns ready on the docks below the Fens. By happenstance the leader of the Freedom League caught wind of these villainous events. With Captain Thunder's arrival the scene would become frantic - Paper Master made off with the Maestro's millions and much of the loot within the ship container, while Thornwolfe learned the meaning in thunder! It would be his greatest defeat!
    Meanwhile, Present Day, Thornwolfe with the Paper Master in tow splashed down in the lake beyond the crash site. Their excape would be short lived if Thornwolfe could not somehow break or deactivate the exploding manacle devices that entangled his new companion... The concussion was almost more than Lucian Creely could stand but he was free and he had the wolf to thank for it. A brute who, as far as he knew, hadn't recognized him as "the Paper Master", the foil in his greatest defeat!
    At the crash site Scwartgeist watched as The Terrible Wind would be blown from the scene splashing down near Thornwolfe and Paper Master. His attack on the Ball of Chain Lightning was less than successful... Locating his old confidant, Mauhler, the Nazi helped to make quick work of the Paladin Armored prison guards.
    Our villains were escaping, Mauhler on the trail of his remaining appendage that was now moving quickly to the west. Schwartgueist would soon meet the team that the Overshadow had pointed out for him... Now the only question is will they listen to the Nazi.

Issue # 1:3 : "SCORTCHED EARTH", February 23, 2007.

  • PREVIEW:
    You stand beside him facing the legions of battle drones and alien scum... Each deafening fist-fall crashes like thunder echoing through the buildings of Freedom City. Two pugilists fight fatigue and pain to continue the violent dance. The roman moves to the upper hand. Managing to throw the ender-being through the Goodman Building and beyond Freedom Hall. The buildings lurch some collapsing and the ender is pinned at the riverside... but not for long. The roman catches his breathe and readies himself for what he knows is coming. The foe slowly rises from the rubble. The battle has obviously taken its toll. The gods square off against each other for what they each know will be a final confrontation. They charge towards each other. Titans clashing... windows blow out and concrete cracks as their struggle renews.
    In the end, the being from the Terminus lies ripped from his armors - his smashed body is hurled back into the dimension of nothing. The rift between two worlds had to be closed. The rift must be closed, else another invasion would be eminent. Centurion flies up to the opening and in a heroic gesture uses the remaining energy in his body to seal the rift. As the last of the rift blinks out of existance, the roman relaxes knowing that he has stopped the invasion but doomed himself. The epic battle takes its toll and the hero's hero falls from the sky. On impact his body creates a small crater, slipping free from the restraints of the mortal realm and journeys beyond. Freedom's Sentry Statue is erected where he fell, the actual gravesite remains a closely guarded secret, but where is our champion? Buried in the soil of Freedom City, perhaps in Ultima Thule or does he await rebirth?

  • RECAP: Awaking to the carnage of mettle and open air the villains of our tale find their ways amid the rubble of the massive Mag-Lev Train crash. Their last memories are of being on the speeding prison transport. The Blackstone Penatentury facility in Freedom City would be delieving their worst crooks, criminals and madmen to LOCKDOWN - a secret prison somewhere in the western Rockies.
    Getting their barings the villains watched as Paladin Armor units scoured the scene while many other powered beings scattered into the dark and the skies. Thornwolfe, Schwartgeist and the Paper Master pulled themselves from the rubble just in time to watch one of the prison aircraft crash into the tangled train car - this was Schwartgeist's doing! The Nazi Mastermind had found two of his targets and they were making their escape as other crooks such as Baron Semedie and Captain Kraken made their ways into the night. The Terrible Wind had been flung into the fields beyond the crash. He toiled at freeing himself from his handcuffs as a new friend questioned him - the mad homicidal Gepetto was free as well! Mauhler, the last of Schwartgeist's marks found himself strung apart... literally. His cell companion - the very proper Maestro would clearly make a good travelling companion as he aided the masterminding brute to reattatch two of his four limbs...
    Our villains were nearly free of the wreckage but they would not be in the clear for some time, as a ball of chain lightning electrified the sky above the crash site. Soon they will know the meaning of pain!!

Issue # 0:3 : "ORIGIN", February 16, 2007.

  • RECAP: (3) ... aka. "the Character Creation Session". Joining me (your humble writer/gm) for the evening was: Brandon, Adam and Micheal. Andrew and Karl were not able to attend. Planning to be a short 2-3 hours the group enjoyed thinking about the campaign plan until midnight. We went over concepts. Adam has the most complete character following some rule and stat corrections. Adama is up next, having no less than four ideas. Micheal came to the table with a character plan which we will be helping to build for him. The [campaign questions] were given to the group, as were several print handouts detailing the setting. Fun was had by all, pizza was had by most... All looks good for a next week start.

Collectors' Notes

(1) The rare Savage Worlds Comics mini-series was never meant to be an on-going concern, but in light of its success, it was picked up by Mutants & Masterminds Comics as a regular series. The roster was altered; Boneyard, Carnivore and Noise became occasional guest stars, while Man'O War and Whiplash were added to the regular line-up. This gave Stahl Toys a chance to expand the merchandising line. The aliens were also changed somewhat, the V'sori becoming the Star-Khan's Stellar Khanate and the Fins becoming the Grue. Dr. Destruction became the Overshadow in later comics, tying in with one of Mutants & Masterminds' staple villains.
(2) Following the energetic 1st story arc, the comic began it's first monthly series. Publishing 4 popular issues, squabbles within the writing staff caused an early cancellation of the comic. Though still loved by many of the original creators it seems the Star Khan won the day on this book.
(3) With several inspired concepts on the tables the publisher was reminded of the classic series chronicling a "necessary evil in Freedom City" and the creators flocked to it. Within a week most of the character team had been developed, a fully new roster in service of the Overshadow and the first issue was on it's way to press. Time will tell if this series will stand the test of time.
