Thanks Knockwood for clearing up the vandalism edits. Much appreciated.

It looks like there's (unfortunately) a lot of wiki spam here. I haven't tried it myself, but if you're in charge, maybe Bad Behavior would help cut down on the automated stuff? --GargoyleMT 11:18, 8 February 2006 (PST)

We try.[edit]

I do look through the new edits and eliminate whatever spam I see. There is a lot less spam than there could be on here, I dare say. (Check out the Blocked IPs list sometime).

Actually, this is as good a place as any to clarify one thing: I am the Czar, but I work from "outside" in that I don't have access to the machine, just the Wiki. ShannonA can tweak the machine, and I've already asked for some anti-spam provisions.

Then again, anything would probably help... --Lord Knockwood the Mad 14:07, 8 February 2006 (PST)

Blocked Words[edit]

Hi there! is there a way to block full words but not partials? I added text that was refused because, said the message, it contained the banned keyword "c_i_a_l_i_s". Turned out it was "s_o_c_i_a_l_i_s_t"! (It still won't let me type it here, of course.)  :-}

Other than that, thanks for all the good work! -- Mechante Anemone, 16:34, 16 March 2006 (PST)

WS:Main_Page[edit]

I removed the actual cover images to be behind a link as they were quite large and had a link to the index page there. Headers for all the pages under WS include a link to the index page or to the main page with the cover images. If you have a preferred style of main page, feel free to change it. --Curufea 20:00, 12 June 2006 (PDT)

LOL Funny Image on your User Page and a Request[edit]

I have to say I really had a good laugh at the image you have on your user-page. I showed it to one of the people I game with, he had a good laugh too. Do you remember where you got it?

On another note: I have started a new Fantasy Setting sourcebook on this Wiki called Wisrtum. It really is in its infancy. Before it gets much larger, I'd like to know if I am organizing and presenting the information in the best possible way. I've contributed to Wikipedia and Wikisource before, but I've never done anything quite like this. Could you please look it over and give me some pointers. Also, if you wish to contribute material, that would be appreciated!

Thanks,

WikiJeff

Thanks for the Feedback, Question[edit]

Knockwood,

Thanks for the feedback. I've implimented much of what you pointed out, especially the catigorization, which should help with organization and indexing. I should be moving forward with the geogrophy section soon. Then, I'll start in on the "staple races" such as dwarves, elves and so on.

Could you look at the index link on Wisrtum's main page, though. It seems the only way I can create a link for the index is to do an external link like so [ foobarURL description ]. I can't just make this link work lik other, normal wiki-links.

Thanks,

—Jeff

ERROR[edit]

Also,

Every page update (or page creation) spits out the same error, but the content is posted into the Wiki's database:

A database query syntax error has occurred. This may indicate a bug in the software. The last attempted database query was:

    (SQL query hidden)

from within function "SearchMySQL4::update". MySQL returned error "1016: Can't open file: 'searchindex.MYI'. (errno: 145) (localhost)".

Please look into this.

Thanks,

—Jeff

Getting the same error message myself (1) --AusRPGer 17:57, 23 November 2006 (PST)

Thanks for the Help[edit]

Knockwood,

Thanks for the help you've given me. I've added all content pages to the Wisrtum catagory. I'll use your pipe-trick to re-arrange the resulting list as you suggest a bit later. Soon, I'll be adding some serious content, which will (with luck) draw some people into the wiki.

I've totally revamped the main page to Wisrtum, it now looks a lot more friendly -- I barrowed much code from Wikipedia and Wikisource main pages, and hacked the tar out of them. The main page now now looks nice. Btw, you (or whomever) changed the boarder to pastel-purple did so while I was playing arround with the code to the main page... I had a few seconds of serious confusion (followed by a good chuckle) thanks to you!

One question: If I add a catagory to template pages, will that screw things up for pages that call the template?

Ketcha Latter,

—Jeff

You keep it up now, udnrestand? Really good to know.

RPG Motivational Posters Archive[edit]

Are we also going to archive the "Take it Tangacy" posters from this thread too? Roguebfl 21:53, 20 October 2006 (PDT)

Spammer[edit]

66.240.221.36 seams to be added a seaming random string of numbers to a lot of posts (this is one type of spam I can't understand at all) --Roguebfl 15:34, 26 November 2006 (PST)

Error in the spam block list[edit]

I'm seeing this error at the top of pages I've submitted. I know about this error because it used to occur on the wikia wiki frequently. The problem is there is a limit to how big the spam blacklist can be, and you need to delete old entries. Tjoneslo 07:18, 27 February 2007 (PST)

Warning: preg_match(): Compilation failed: regular expression too large at offset 0 in /var/www/rpgnet/wiki/extensions/SpamBlacklist/SpamBlacklist_body.php on line 150

This error in the spamblock has reasserted it's ugly head once again. Tjoneslo 15:39, 27 April 2007 (PDT)

Vandalized page I can't fix[edit]

1001 and more Things that the worst party in Eberron is forbidden from doing has been vadalized by our deleter or one of his friends. I've tried three times to revert deletion, but can't for some reason. Can you do this. Thanks. Tjoneslo 11:15, 26 April 2007 (PDT)

750 things Mr. Welch can no longer do in a RPG has been vandalized by a random troll. The page is too big to diff (I get timed out on the diff). Thank. Tjoneslo 11:35, 27 July 2007 (PDT)

Adding Captcha[edit]

Have you thought about adding a CAPTCHA system to RPGNet to stop the annoying deleter and some of the other spammers? ConfirmEdit is the default one. But there is also ReCAPTCHA. I like the second one, because it forces the Spammer to do some useful work when adding their annoying links. They both look like they work in Wiki 1.6. I realize you can't do these changes, but perhaps you can direct me to the person who can. Tjoneslo 09:59, 11 July 2007 (PDT)

Update the Spam BlackList[edit]

This wiki has a spam blacklist extension installed and presumably working. You can slow our spammer fiend by adding the below text to this page: MediaWiki:Spam-blacklist, assuming you have access:

125mb\.com
t35\.com
somee\.com
ifrance\.com
freeweb7\.com
rigour\.info
dlyaoleg\.info
And look, he's gone. The bot was posting about every 15 minutes to half hour. Only suggestion would be to move the line "# " to the end of the page to make the list readable. I knew there was a simple solution to this problem. Tjoneslo 03:56, 25 August 2007 (PDT)
Oops, too soon. one more to add. Tjoneslo 05:32, 25 August 2007 (PDT)
110mb\.com

GORT[edit]

I created a bot user named GORT to affect the spam reversion changes. The advantage of GORT is his changes are generally invisible to the Recent Changes list. The disadvantage is GORT's changes are largely invisible to the Recent Changes list. You need to click the "Show Bots" links to see the changes. I wanted to tell you this because I was this evening cleaning up today's spammer when you came in as well. I didn't want you to think I've been slacking. Tjoneslo 16:32, 2 October 2007 (PDT)

GORT is actually me, logged in as GORT. He went to maintenance mode this past week because I've been without net access. I've got Python (and wiki pybot code), and when I have some spare time, I'll look into creating a real bot to do this work. Tjoneslo 05:26, 3 October 2007 (PDT)

New Spammer Trick[edit]

Our favorite bot spammer has discovered a new trick (or perhaps we've gained a new "friend"). The idea is they double team an article, the first IP replacing a title with an URL, the second deleting the text on the page. This leaves only a blank page with a spam URL and disrupts the use of the "rollback" functionality. Tjoneslo 07:04, 19 October 2007 (PDT)

STOLEN PICTURES ON USER PAGE[edit]

Knockwood, you don't have permission from Neolucky, Kami, or Klar to use their pictures for your "motivational pictures." The "succubus" "furry trust" and "Male/Female players" pictures are being used without permission. Yvie Schroeder has already tried to remove the offending pictures by request of those artists and you reverted the page. Please take the pictures down or we will ask for moderator action against you.

Sorry about that--since there are people out there who simply irrationally hate deviantArt, and no explanation given for the removal, I interpreted the initial removal as vandalism and reverted it. That said, a simple note to me here would have sufficed... --Lord Knockwood the Mad 17:13, 25 November 2008 (PST)

Page lockdown[edit]

Would it be possible to have Rowan Marmalade locked so only registered users can edit it? It's getting targeted by spammers.

GORT has blocked the page. GORT 16:30, 19 October 2009 (PDT)
Thanks.

Actually, would it be possible to have that done to all pages linked from the body of Once_more_with_feeling and subpages thereof? The spammers seem to be targeting that game for some reason. Andrensath 17:36, 22 October 2009 (NZDT)

Spambots[edit]

Hi. The wiki is still being attacked; tried reverting all the edits so far but they keep coming. I recommend that the IPs are individually blocked for now, since they seem to begin spamming hours afterwards as well. Mentifisto 15:46, 13 May 2011 (UTC)

Motivational_Posters-2:1801-1900 needs to be deleted too. Mentifisto 22:30, 13 May 2011 (UTC)

Aggressive Regexp in Spam Blacklist[edit]

I can't edit some of my pages because the website gameartsguild.com (my own site, not spam) triggers a regular expression [a-z]{12]\.com in the spam blacklist:

compare versions

The comment suggests that this regexp was supposed to block randomly generated URLs composed of 12 letters from a to z followed by .com. Instead it blocks all URLs with composed of 12 or more letters followed by .com.

Unable to undo and save some pages.[edit]

It looks like you tried to undo whatever the spammer did to some of our pages, but now we can't save our own edits. Is that a feature of your work, or something snuck in by the spammer? Here are two examples: http://wiki.rpg.net/index.php/RULES http://wiki.rpg.net/index.php/CREW I can edit sections of them, but not the general page.

  • Whoops... it's possible you did your thing while I was doing my thing, and they conflicted. Should be reverted back to what it was pre-spam, though. --Lord Knockwood the Mad

Nope. It still won't let me change anything. These pages have picture links (clicking on picture, opens a link), they work, but is that why it won't let me make changes?

  • Hm... double-check. Is it specifically the pictures section of RULES, or other sections? (It's also possible that you were blocked because I had the page open checking it out, sorry about that.) --Lord Knockwood the Mad

The RULES page, the Verse page and the CREW page will not save edits made from the top of the page. I can edit pages without those picture links fine.

  • Found the trouble. We probably went overboard with spam-blocking by banning 'link' followed by '=' altogether. (Gotta run it by ShannonA to fix--I can't put that in either, and I'm the bleedin' Czar.) If you can do without direct image links, you can edit things just fine. --Lord Knockwood the Mad

So... is the plan going forward that image links are no longer supported?

  • Unfortunately, yes. The image link has been used for enough spam (especially porn spam) that it's got a bad reputation. --Lord Knockwood the Mad

Hello[edit]

Hello, I'm Tanager. I'm thinking about joining this fine wiki. First though, I'd like to ask a couple of questions:

Firstly, do you guys permit gamed based on franchises, like Doctor Who or World of Warcraft?

Secondly, is it possible to create wiki pages on which campaigns are run? We had those on Heroes of the Multiverses Wiki, but I'm not sure how standard those are.

Well, that's it for now. Tanager 14:49, 20 September 2012 (PDT)

Good to have you with us.
Games based on franchises are no problem. The usual prohibitions against claiming the work as your own or trying to charge for it are there, but that's generally not a problem for games.
Wiki pages on campaigns are not only allowed, but lately they're the bulk of our (non-spam) traffic. No problem there. --Lord Knockwood the Mad 15:28, 20 September 2012 (PDT)
Thanks! Tanager 20:59, 20 September 2012 (PDT)

Problems with accessing RPG.net itself[edit]

Hello. I doubt I'm right to write here but anyway. I have a problem with accessing rpg.net itself, but not wiki page. It seems because my provider gives dynamic IP and one or some of them was blocked by rpg.net security system.

Several times it showed some error with explanation of possible hacker activity with google as referrer but now it only shows me "Error 503 : Service Temporarily Unavailable" and nothing more. Is there any way to prove I'm not the hacker which block was given? I had an account with the same name (VartLoccur) but left it a year or so ago.

Thanks in advance. --VartLoccur 09:52, 26 May 2013 (PDT)

Hm. I'm not having any problems accessing RPG.net, which makes me think the problem is on your end. If you're still having problems, you may want to run MalwareBytes on your machine. -Lord Knockwood the Mad 13:46, 26 May 2013 (PDT)

This is detailed message of forbidden access. It seems it renews daily:

403 FORBIDDEN!

Either the address you are accessing this site from has been banned for previous malicious behavior or the action you attempted is considered to be hostile to the proper functioning of this system.

The detected reason(s) you were blocked are: Proxy provider for hackers (HN-080).

Your IP, and Domain Name (if resolvable) has been logged to a local honeypot, along with the referring page (if any), QUERY, POST, User Agent, time of access, and date. Please either 1. Stop the bad behavior, or 2. Cease accessing this system.

Your connection details: Record #: 499998 Time: Sun, 26 May 2013 19:59:06 -0700 Running: 0.4.10a1 Host: pool-37-140-88-107.is74.ru IP: 37.140.88.107 Post: Query: Stripped Query: Referer: User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/28.0.1500.20 Safari/537.36 Reconstructed URL: http:// www.rpg.net /

Generated by ZB Block 0.4.10a1

And I'm certain problem is in dynamic IP (and it's used for several users via proxy, it seems) so some other users might suffered from malware or the like and the whole branch of IPs was banned.

Though, if rpg.net doesn't use ZB Block then problem is certainly on my side. Thank you. --VartLoccur 21:20, 26 May 2013 (PDT)

Anyway, the problem is temporarily solved by accessing via different provider. Thank you. --VartLoccur 05:00, 27 May 2013 (PDT)

Impossible to create an account[edit]

Good day, it is impossible to create an account. It always says that the "confirmation code is wrong or missing". Could you check that or relay this message to the good person, thanks, 50.99.195.98 13:01, 12 October 2013 (PDT)

Recent vandal[edit]

Hi, I just noticed you protected User:ShannonA after another vandalism repeat from the same user.

I looked through the history after the third re-vandalism and noticed the same edits, and a User Talk page blanking, being made by User:Geronimo (contribs). I'm don't know what the wiki's socking definition or ban policies are, so I just wanted to bring the account to your attention for handling if and as appropriate.

Cheers! — Soteria (talk) 10:55, 2 December 2019 (PST)

TinyD10.com should be .ORG[edit]

The current link in the Open_Game_Systems page for Tiny D10 points to the .COM page, which is a virus propagation page. I believe that it should instead point to https://tinyd10.org which is the correct wiki for the system. Thanks for looking after everything here! - LM

Thanks for checking this! I just fixed the link to point to td10.org. -Lord Knockwood the Mad (talk) 01:22, 5 February 2023 (PST)
