Dr. Kadabra's Story (Tobyverse)
"People are under the impression that the Advent was where it all began. They're wrong. Well, ok, mostly they're right, but there were a few of us around before that. I'm one of them."
"I have to say, I was on the lucky side of things. If I had come out an eight foot tall troll I probably would have not done as well. Course, I probably wouldn't have been such a prick either, but I digress. At the time, I had no idea what was going on, but, well, on my fourteenth birthday, I blacked out end ended up on the top of a skyscraper. "
"I'm not going to pretend the change had no disadvantages - my eyes looked like the inside of a lava lamp, shapes flowing around everywhere, and my powers were pretty hard to control. But those powers...I could teleport myself long distances, and later learned to do so with other objects. I could create illusions at a whim. And you know what I did? I received these amazing abilities, and you know what I decided to do?"
"Cash in."
"See, back then, no one really had a damn clue what a Changeling was...so I decided to try my hand at stage magic. My powers gave me the ability to outclass everyone else in my field...you might remember me, Kadbras, the Blind Illusionist. Yeah, I decided to wear a blindfold while performing - it hid my eyes and made me look far more impressive."
"I rose pretty high, made quite a bit of money along the way. I had it all."
"And you know what? I hated it."
"I guess I just sort of felt cheap. And the way I was wasting my gift, I should have. I rethought my life, stopped performing, finally went to college. I started studying history and folklore, and along the way discovered the source of my power. I started studying magic, the real kind, and though I never did much with it, I grew rather knowledgeable. I felt at peace for the first time in quite a while."
"Then, a decade later, the Advent occurred."
"I don't know, I felt a sort of responsibility toward these people. I wasted a wonderful gift, I couldn't stand to see others do the same. So, I reinvented myself again. I invested a lot of the fortune I gained rather well, and it was time to put it to use."
"Now, I'm a philanthropist. I've started shelters for displaced Changelings across the country, work programs, everything I can. Seeing as I've outed myself as a Changeling, that's not surprising to people. But that's only half the plan. See, the one thing I did do right was learn how to control my powers, and I realize that some others will need this as well. So, when I hear about a Changeling with great ability but little focus, I make them an offer. See, I'm building a team. A team that will, by example, be the light of peace in this dangerous world."
