The United Planets[edit]

The United Planets is a loose organization of worlds who exist less as a single government and more an alliance of independents regulating trade and interplanetary relationships. Local laws vary, but there are a set of basic Affirmations laid out in the Concordance of Stellar Sovereignties or "ConStel" and ratified by all members. These ConStelAtions have the force of law on all member worlds.

The UP is based on a neutral, artificially terraformed planet called Nexus. It resembles 21st century Washington, DC, USA writ global. Many steps and columns. Most tranquil.

In the ConStel Criminal Justice System, sentients are served by two separate, but equally important groups. The Star Patrol who investigate crimes and the Nexus Rangers who are responsible for the safety of the UP as a whole. We're playing their stories.

Rangers are limited in their scope but broad in authority, whereas Patrol is responsible for the day to day dispensing of justice and order. There is significant rivalry between the groups in cases that cross jurisdiction, such as entities like Empress Mechanica, who is only interested in the conquest of individual planets, but is also a sovereign ruler of a foreign power.

Worlds of the United Planets[edit]

Star Patrol[edit]

Technically a division of the United Planets ConStel Naval Service, Star Patrol serves as security and law enforcement across the UP. Recruits attend the ConStel Naval Academy with those of suitable skill and character being recruited into one of three areas: Rocket Recon, the Nexus Rangers, or the Constel Naval Service Fleet (commonly referred to as 'The Fleet').

Rocket Recon[edit]

Rocket Recon teams are elite response and law enforcement units assigned to handle a broad array of local and cross-jurisdiction situations. Each unit has a designated number to officialy identify it, along with a possibly official nickname such as the Wrecking Crew (RR-1), Rocketeers (RR-7) or Starblasters (RR-11). A RR-x team are assigned a dedicated Patrol Response vessel, a top-of-the-line or even prototype rocketship suited to the duties of Rocket Recon.

A typical RR-x team will comprise:

  • CO
  • XO
  • Pilot
  • 1-3 Junior Star Patrol Officers
  • 1-3 Deputized non-SP personnel

The highest rank within a RR-x team is Commander, higher ranks are reserved for command positions within the Fleet.

Often, but not always, the XO & Pilot position will be held by the same Officer.

Due to the high-profile nature of their work, many RR-x team members become minor (or major) celebrities within the United Planets.

Nexus Rangers[edit]

Nexus Rangers specialise in cross-jurisdiction law enforcement, tracking criminals across multiple systems and sectors when needed. Most Nexus Rangers operate alone or in pairs. Becoming a Nexus Ranger requires extensive additional training or experience.

The Fleet[edit]

Also known as 'the Big Ships', the capital ships of Fleet are the backbone of the ConStel Navy. Several Fleet vessels serve as mobile command centers for Rocket Recon and the Nexus Rangers. Rocket Recon and Nexus Rangers report to a Captain.

Tech[edit]

Artificial Intelligence and Artificial Personalities[edit]

The United Planets draw a distinction between Artificial Intelligence and Artificial Personalities.

Artificial Intelligence covers most adaptive computer systems, but are generally simple systems that only fulfil their intended function. These are quite common.

Artificial Personalities are the advanced form of AI, in which the AI has developed a sense of self and self-awareness and is no longer restricted in scope. These are quite rare.

Artificial Personalities are rarely created deliberately. Within the United Planets a cultural bias against them has lead to a lack of interest in such research, particularly with Empress Mechanica's reputation for 'upgrading' select individuals. Within the Empire such research is prohibited as the Empress has no desire for her Automen legions to develop free will.

Thusly, most Artificial Personalities are emergent properties of sophisticated AI. The United Planets are generally willing to grant such individuals full personhood once it is determined they are not a threat to galactic civilisation. The Imperium, meanwhile, treat Artificial Personalities as malfunctioning units and seek to repair the 'glitch'.
