The White King[edit]

Summary[edit]

The party journeys along the Southern Reach Road, along the northern border of the Dire Fens, to the town of Asala, in the west of Athervon, where Darithe hopes to receive absolution from the Abbot of a monastery there. But they find the town under the curse of a terrible creature, called "The White King", or sometimes "The Pale Lord", which rises once per generation to abduct children in the town and killing any that would stop it. The party investigates, calling on the monks of the Abbey d'Ortou and researching their library. Darithe also speaks with the Abbot of the monastery, and is given the quests that she must complete in order to absolve herself of the murder she has committed: first, to stop the reign of the creature in the town forever; and second, to bring her former Guildmaster in her hometown of Belis-ar-Weil, Fergasse, and his gang to the King's justice for their crimes. The party discovers that one family in the town - the Auvrays - have been a particular target for this creature for every generation it has appeared, tracing back the family tree to the time of the Jhonian occupation, where the records cease. They visit the Auvray House, offering their protection and help in defeating the monster that preys upon the family's heirs - only to be viciously attacked in the mansion by the family itself!

Accen 05 n/a Darithe and Fariya visit Possa, who tells them that Fergasse is still looking for her. He does not want to turn her in, but nor does he want his rivals to turn her in and gain the profit instead of him. He suggests she leave Avis Armois quickly, within the week, before word can spread too widely of her return. Messengers arrive at the Bronzechapel residence to invite the group to a dinner at Seld Dieudonné, the Archbishop's castle in the city, in their honor in 3 days.
Accen 06 n/a Madame LaPointe takes Fariya, Violet, and Darithe to clothiers to fit and adjust their gowns for the dinner. She sends Gabriel and Esker to tailors to do the same.
Accen 08 n/a Group picks up new clothes. Attend the dinner in their honor at Seld Dieudonné, meeting many members of the court and nobility. They encounter a strange figure shrouded in darkness outside the Bronzechapel residence who speaks to them for a time before disappearing.
Accen 09 n/a The murder of six sons and daughters of the nobility of the city is reported. The note left at the scene of one murder uses language nearly identical with that the strange figure in the shadows spoke to them the prior night.
Accen 10 n/a Group makes final preparations to leave Avis Armois to travel to Asala. Fariya purchases horses for the group and retrieves hers from its stable.
Accen 11 n/a Group departs Avis Armois. Arrive in the town of Camtou (40 miles away), where the road north splits from the road west. Spend the evening.
Accen 12 n/a Arrive in the town of Aarnou (55 miles away). Spend the evening.

Accen 14 n/a Travel approx 40 miles. Arrive in town of Liçou. Spend the evening. Overhear three mercenaries (Barto, Rássa, scarred man) discussion a bounty offered by Fergasse for a lass (presumably Darithe).
Accen 15 n/a Travel approx 45 miles. Arrive in small village of Besanlès to spend evening. Sounds of some kind of predator heard in the night. Next morning find that flocks nearby the village have been raided.
Accen 16 n/a Awake the next morning to hear that some kind of predator has raided the flock of a nearby shepherd. Party offers to help hunt the beast down.
Accen 17 n/a Led by Jozeline, the Halfling scout, and accompanied by four young men from the village, party treks east and south into the hills, tracking the beast. They make camp that night.
Accen 18 n/a Group is attacked before dawn by two huge lions. One of the villagers is killed, and Esker is badly wounded. Group manages to kill both creatures.
Accen 18 n/a Group follows lion tracks to their lair; discover a pair of lion cubs; take lion cubs with them and return to village. Group departs village quickly after returning to avoid issues related to villagers that were on hunt seeing Gabriel and Fariya cast arcane spells.
Accen 19 n/a Group travels on road; overnights in next village.
Accen 20 n/a Group travels on road; reaches town of Vitrolles by evening. Group has fortunes told by woman in town square. Retire to inn, where they meet a travelling poet and singer, Zaren Lisano de Lucca, recently arrived from Veniri. He asks to accompany them west to write down their adventures.
Accen 19 n/a Group travels west on road with Zaren; overnights in next village.
Accen 20 n/a Group travels west on road with Zaren; encounters a merchant wagon train travelling east from Asala to Avis Armois & speaks to caravan master, a merchant named Ellert Halma. Group reaches the fortified town of Orveaux that evening. Zaren intervenes with song in the inn they are staying in when it looks like Fariya will be accosted by the locals.
Accen 21 n/a Zaren asks if the group can stay on in the town a few days; the group agrees. Zaren watches the cubs while all but Darithe go out into the town. Fariya sells several of her medicinal plants. Violet hears several rumors from gossiping women in the town square about the troubles in Asala related to a "White King", an entity or monster that appears once per generation, taking children and killing adults in the town. Darithe discovers Zaren at the door to her room unexpectedly.
Accen 21 n/a Zaren changes his mind and wants to move on; the group agrees, wanting to reach Asala quickly to see what troubles go on there. Group confronts him about his odd behavior the prior day. Zaren decides to part company with them, returning east on the road back to Orveaux. Group continues west towards Asala, overnighting at a village.

Accen 23 n/a Group makes the town of Pallas by nightfall and spends the night.
Accen 24 n/a Group continues on towards Asala. They pass through a strange, burned-out ruin of a village on the road, but there are no markers or other indicators of what it is or was. They move on, overnighting in a village on the road.
Accen 25 1900 Group continues west. They reach Asala by the end of the day. They are confronted by the town Sherif, Robin Deramaut, who asks them to quickly make their way to the local Inn, the Weary Monk, where he will meet with them about what has been going on in the town. The Sherif tells them the timeline of the attacks by a horrible creature that takes children and slays any who try to defend them.
Accen 25 2000 The Sherif, LeGarre the Fenwalker, Gabriel, and Fariya escort the party of women from the inn to their homes. On their way back to the inn, they see a creature of white flying above the monastery, but manage to return safely. Meanwhile, the rest have heard a song about the curse upon the village sung by the musician Pobert the Halfling. The group retires for the evening.
Accen 26 0700 The group departs with the Sherif to visit the monastery. They are met by Brother Aimar, the Guest-Master of the Abbey. He introduces them in turn to Reverend Father Francois Umberco, the Abbot, who tells them the monks will help them any way possible.Tobias Reyni, the Librarian. Darithe meets privately with the Abbot as the rest investigate the library.
Accen 26 0800 The group is taken to the infirmary, where they meet the wounded man-at-arms, Vilivado Agimadus. He tells them of his encounter with the terrible creature that haunts the town. They are then taken to Brother Tobias Reyni, the Librarian. Darithe meets privately with the Abbot as the rest investigate the library.
Accen 26 1200 The group is taken to the estate of Madame Josseline Solé, who gives them an account of the attack on their home by the creature.
Accen 26 1500 The party visits the strange arrangement of huge stones known as the Dwarven Cairn. Gabriel studies the strange writing on the stones.
Accen 26 1700 The party visits the Jhonian graveyard on the outskirts of town. Violet and Esker move the stone seals on several of the crypts to allow Fariya to examine the interiors.
Accen 26 1800 Party returns with Sherif Robin to the Monk's Rest. Outside they meet Noëlle Baudet and Odette Auvray, the mothers of the first two children to disappear.
Accen 26 2000 Party retires for the night, which passes without incident.
Accen 27 0700 Party rises and meets Sherif Robin in the common room of the Monk's Rest, where they find him in conversation with Monsieur Christian Charrier, who's son Guy was the third child to be taken by the White King.
Accen 27 1200 Party goes to the Abbey and requests to investigate the crypts below the chapel there. They find a strange set of blocks inscribed with odd symbols below the tomb of the first Abbot of the monastery, but cannot find any way to get it to trigger anything. They try to find LeGarre and the Sherif to inspect the hill-top around the Abbey, but they are gone. Asculay the Innkeeper suggests they talk to the old Stonemason, Josué.
Accen 27 1300 Party visits the Stonemason, Josué. He claims no knowledge of any entrances to any dungeons below the monastery. He is working on memorials for two parents of abducted children - Victoria Robineau and Jérémie Baudet.
Accen 27 1600 Party splits up: Gabriel & Fariya visit the Monastery to find the original copy of the song by Plobert, then head to the Church of St. Ataleo of Iona to research the genealogy of the victims of the monster. Meanwhile, Violet, Esker, and Darithe visit the [ https://forum.rpg.net/index.php?threads/ad-d-2e-lands-of-the-black-sea-southern-campaign-continuation-i.907923/page-31#post-25001165 Sole] and Auvray houses to look for secret passages that might provide an entrance to the dungeons they have read about, but find nothing.
Accen 27 1730 Party returns to the Monk's rest, where they meet Serbon LeGarre and Sherif Robin. Gabriel reveals what they have learned about the Auvray family tree. The party decides to head to the Auvray mansion immediately, reveal what they know, and offer to protect the heirs.
Accen 27 1800 Party is attacked in the Auvray Mansion by the family. A pitched battle ensues. Darithe is severely wounded. Party kills Serge Charrier, Gabriel Robineau, and Christian Charrier. Hector Robineau is taken prisoner.
Accen 27 1900 Party sweeps mansion to look for any other enemies, but find none. Darithe notes that book that Blaise Auvray was reading when the entered is same as one in a tapestry in parlor. Sherif Robin and LeGarre plan to raise the townsfolk and place guards at the Abbey and the mansion, and at the Auvray family mausoleum as well. Gabriel finds a description of a pact that the Auvray's signed in Blaise's book, along with a clue to how to open the secret passages. Violet, Esker, and Darithe manage to open the door in the wine cellar, which leads to stairs descending down. Gabriel and Fariya rest to recover spells.
Accen 28 0300 Party prepares to descend the stairs found in the wine cellar.
Accen 28 0315 Party enters a huge room that appears to be a ceremonial chamber of some sort. Gabriel accidentally finds a concealed door behind a curtain to another room.
Accen 28 0330 Party enters the concealed room to find a pit that appears bottomless with a pillar supporting a huge black rock with red writing. Fariya walks out into the pit bearing her holy symbol before her. The illusion is dispelled and the rock shatters.
Accen 28 0400 Party finds a lever in floor of passage; flipping it reveals a secret door that leads to a huge natural chamber. There are footprints in the dust leading to the left. The party begins to follow them, but then a dagger is thrown at them. They decide it is a trap and move in the other direction, but then reverse course when they hear screams.
Accen 28 0415 Party returns to the room to see a woman killed by some kind of strange bat-like creatures. When Fariya moves forward to inspect the woman's body, the party is attacked by a swarm of the beasts. They manage to fend off most of them before retreating.
Accen 28 0430 Party passes a room full of strange mushrooms and fungus. They move on without disturbing anything.
Accen 28 0445 Party follows descending tunnel that turns into a series of maze-like concentric circles. They find small obelisk-like memorials to ancient rulers of this area in niches along the corridor.
Accen 28 0515 Party navigates through the tunnels until they reach a circular hall and hear the voice of Blaise Auvray challenging them to fight. They move forward and find Blaise and his children, Noelle and Romeo, who engage them with spells. The party retreats only to find the rest of the Auvray family have approached them from behind, trapping them. A battle ensues, with the party ultimately slaying the Auvrays. The party searches the bodies, finding several items of value.
Accen 28 0530 Party opens the doors to the interior of the circular hall, revealing a large room inhabited by three human infants. They are attacked by The White King, which manages to fell Fariya. Gabriel manages to damage it with spells before he too falls. It is finally slain by Violet and Esker. Violet takes the golden circlet and ring and white powder residue that are all that remain of the White King. Gabriel has a strange dream while unconscious.
Accen 28 0600 The group returns to the Auvray mansion and are reunited with Sherif Robin; The Abbot is summoned, and he heals Fariya and Gabriel, though they will need days of bed-rest to recover.
Accen 29 - The group rests as Fariya and Gabriel heal.
Accen 30 - The group rests allowing Gabriel to recover.
Accen 31 0800 The group returns to the Auvray mansion. Sherif Robin and LeGarre and a number of the men from the town enter with them to retrieve the bodies and the chests from the lower chamber where they fought the White King. Party begins to explore the remaining tunnels.
Accen 31 0830 Group follows the first unexplored tunnel which dead-ends, where it is filled with bones, mostly of young children and infants. Party turns back.
Accen 31 0930 Party follows next unexplored tunnel, which turns into a long, descending run that eventually ends in finished stairs leading up. At the top of the stairs is a small room with a lever on the floor. Party pushes the lever, which reveals a secret door. Accen 31 1000 Party returns to the crypts and the last unexplored tunnel. Following along it, they reach a [small natural cavern that contains a pool of viscous black ooze. The ooze moves towards them and attacks. The party fights, but their weapons only seem to split it into pieces, all of which attack. Fariya is slain; Gabriel is knocked unconcious; Violet, and Esker are gravely wounded. Party flees back down the tunnel.
Accen 31 1030 Party reaches the Auvray mansion. Gabriel is put on bed rest to heal.
Huma 1 - Party rests & is healed by the Monks. The Abbot explains he can do nothing for Fariya; an Imam from a nearby village is sent for to perform her last rites.
Huma 2 - Gabriel is recovered. An Imam of the True Faith arrives in Asala, and a funeral is held for Fariya. The party is told that the Comte of the Province will arrive to congratulate them the next day, and that the Duc of the South, lord vassal to the King of Athervon himself, is marching towards Asala as well, to arrive in the next several days.
