Not exactly bright, and even moreso not able to even speak Common, the minotaur Erk is pretty much about as smart as a small child.  A really big small child.  Erk grew up in Droaam but was orphaned at a very young age.  Thus, Erk never really learned of his race's inherent hatred of lesser races, but quickly picked up on his inherent sense of direction.  During a routine hunt through Droaam for the infamous "EXP", the crew picked Erk up, not sure what to make of him at first.  Marish thinks he's cute, cuz he's all furry and stuff, but he's not very smart and no one really understands anything he says.  He seems to have an undying affection for Captain Jarlot, and will defend him with his last breath if need be.  His sense of direction is uncanny, even if no one understands what he says, he's always capable of pointing at least.

Word Being (not its real name), a god of puzzles from somewhere that isn’t Eberron, who is currently merged with Erk (statistics unknown)

This entity usually shows up as intelligence and wit that would seem unnatural for a minotaur like Erk.  It also has considerable powers of illusion.  It’s ability to remain hidden so far may be due in part to not actually doing anything noteworthy.  Those who try to read it find that it just wants to run the bar and have a look around.  It is overly fond of puzzles, and will go out of its way to try and solve one.  However, its definition of “puzzle” maybe quite different from anyone else’s.

Erk[edit]

"Do not grow too far in power that you cannot think your way out of this paper bag."

Erk boarded the Forgotten Freedom in the guise of the usual dumb minotaur mercenary. A couple of times he demonstrated surprising intellect—- but only inside his own head—- and powers of illusion—- though not that anyone noticed. During the construction of the ship's bar, it was decided that the bartender should be as simple to understand as possible. A guy who communicates in grunts fit the bill perfectly.

It wasn't until 13's debut rampage that Erk revealed his true self: a god of puzzles from a world under construction. In his Word Being form (a minotaur composed of a transparent shell of words, wearing a cape) he was able to bring peace to 13. After that he went right back to tending the bar. Since that time he hasn't done a single notable thing, other than having the bar named after him.

The current outlook for Erk is that he will be tending his bar indefinitely, as the world-building project he was part of got canceled. This suits him just fine, as dispensing wisdom is one of the time-honored traditions of bartending. Occasionally he leads a group of his employees on various benevolent mercenary missions under the name of the E-Team.

Erk has recently become known as the go-to guy for information on the FF's growing demiplane of Lower Deck city.

Roleplaying Hints: Combine the knowledgable bartending of "Cheers", Hannibal's leadership style from "A-Team", and Yoda, except filtered through a benevolent cynicism and knowledge that he could be wrong. Then wrap them up in a body that could beat your face out the back of your head and which never gets used in that capacity.
