The party members may be connected in some manner to Galen Verlaine, a noted wizard who retired from service to King Belvor three years ago. Until recently, he has lived in seclusion near the small fishing village of Morsten, across the Veng River from the Horned Society. Verlaine went missing a month ago, and his niece, Sylvie, is going to Morsten to investigate.

Possible connections for player characters include: former teacher, former employer, family member (uncle, cousin, or more distant), or friend of the family. It's possible the character has no direct connection to Verlaine but knows Sylvie, his niece, who's gathering a group to accompany her. One further possibility is that the character is going to the village for other reasons and travels with the others in the same caravan.

The party will travel together across Furyondy to Morsten in a group of wagons and carriages. The bulk of the adventure takes place in and around the village and will conclude back in Chendl. When the group arrives in Morsten, they'll have more on their hands than finding a missing wizard. It'll be up to them to discover why this formerly peaceful village has become a place of suspicion and fear, where whole families pack up and leave overnight, never to be seen again. Some say that agents of the Horned Society -- or even the dreaded Iuz -- are corrupting the village for their own foul purposes, but nobody knows for sure.

The game is based on a published module of appropriate difficulty for a party of first-level of adventurers. The descriptions, maps, and storyline have been modified from the original, but the encounters have been left at the same power level, since they were professionally play-tested years ago.

Character Creation

Update, 11/17/2010: Recruiting is currently closed.

First, please complete the character interview and PM it to Celeste, the DM, or post it to the recruitment thread. If you have questions or concerns, please PM Celeste.

Players can choose from a selection of pre-generated characters (some customization allowed), or they can pick a desired character class/kit and assign stats chosen from 3 sets of rolls provided by the DM.

Further details are available on the character interview page.

  • Level: 1st
  • Alignments: Chaotic Good, Neutral Good, Lawful Good
  • Classes: Any standard. No psionics.
  • Preferred Races: Human, Elf, Half-Elf, Dwarf, Half-Orc (others by approval from DM)
  • Kits: By approval from DM. Most allowed.
  • Deity: Any neutral or good Greyhawk deity that doesn't conflict with the character's alignment, race, or class. Can also be an atheist or agnostic.

House Rules

  • Humans can multi-class.
  • PCs get full hit points at first level.
  • Language slots don't combine with character points. PCs get the number of languages they would be entitled to under standard 2nd edition.
  • Clothing (within reason) doesn't add to encumbrance.
  • A modified version of the Death's Door Optional Rule is in effect.
    • HP Loss: If a character is reduced to exactly 0 HPs, he falls to the ground unconscious. He's stable (not losing HPs), but completely vulnerable. If a character is reduced to anywhere from -1 to the negative value of his Constitution score, he is not only unconscious but also rapidly declining. He will lose 1 HP per round until he is stabilized -- by binding his wounds, using the healing non-weapon proficiency, or casting a healing spell. When a character drops below the negative of his Constitution, he is dead.
    • Recovery: If a PC is stable but still at 0 or lower HPs, he's unconscious. If he has been healed to 1 or higher HPs, he is conscious but may be delirious or feverish. He can't move or fight, and he can barely talk. Only a full day of bed rest (or a full Heal spell) will return the PC to his full abilities.
